The mission of the Institute is to provide the State of Georgia with a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in marine science. This is achieved through the development of strong internal research programs across a broad range of subdisciplines. Research activities at the Institute are conducted on scales ranging from local economic and environmental issues to global processes and phenomena. In addition, the Skidaway Institute serves regional and state-wide educational and management needs for access to marine research facilities. Although SkIO is not a degree-granting institution, its faculty hold adjunct appointments at System institutions and other universities throughout the US and serve as mentors and advisors for undergraduate and graduate students who will ultimately receive their degrees from their home institution.

WOO2003 - Waves And Operational Oceanography A scientific workshop to assess the current state of knowledge on waves in relation to currents, surface drifts and airsea interactions hosted by the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM). http://surfouest.free.fr/WOO2003/
Extractions: Following developments in the field of wave current interactions and recent events including the accidental pollution from the oil tanker Prestige, the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM) hosted a scientific workshop to assess the current state of knowledge on waves in relation to currents, surface drifts and air-sea interactions. This workshop was an occasion to discuss the state of the art of ocean monitoring with Envisats ASAR, JASONs altimeter, and future instruments (SWIMSAT) or techniques (GPS reflections from the surface), wave modelling (current third-generation models and beyond) and their practical use (operational forecasting of waves, surface mixed layer and surface drifts, dangerous waves). Participants helped define how observations, wave research and operational forecasting can be combined with the emerging operational oceanography to provide relevant services for end-users, based on theory for wave-current interaction processes including hydrodynamic modulation, turbulent profiles and air-sea fluxes. Waves are the driving force of littoral zone dynamics, responsible for coastal erosion and flooding, and on a larger scale waves determine the still poorly known air-sea exchanges (of momentum, heat, CO2 ...), a challenge for understanding global change and climate dynamics. This workshop was also supported by CNRS and Ifremer. Conclusions will be posted shortly on these pages with the proceedings.

Oceanography Dalhousie is a world leader in oceanographic research with stateof-the-art facilities. Training and funding is offered for PhD and MSc degrees in biological, chemical, geological and physical areas of oceanography. http://www.dal.ca/~wwwocean/index.html
Extractions: at Dalhousie University The story of our Department is one of growth and accruing influence, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of oceanographic research and education. From a mere 10 faculty at its founding in 1971, we now number 19 full-time faculty, with many additional joint, cross and adjunct appointments. Research grants and contracts now exceed $6.0 Million per year, some 35% of the total research funds raised by the Faculty of Science. Arguably, we can be considered Canadas premier Department of Oceanography. This increasing prominence is reflected in past and current housing of the Canadian offices of large international projects, including the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), and the Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS). In the early 1990s we were fortunate to house one of the first Networks of Centers for Excellence, known as OPEN (Open Production Enhancement Network), and today we are breaking new ground with the CFI-funded Center for Marine Environmental Prediction , which aims at a predictive understanding of changes in the marine environment through both modelling and new technology.

Extractions: home Services Moving Image Collection Timeline ... Other Sites The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Manuscript collections include the papers of many scientists. Among the holdings are the papers of oceanographers Roger Revelle, and John Isaacs; marine biologists Martin Johnson and Per Scholander, geophysicists Walter Munk and Russell Raitt; geologists H. William Menard, Robert Dietz, and Francis Shepard; and meteorologist Jerome Namias. The collection includes a series of letters written by Joseph Matkin, a seaman on H.M.S. CHALLENGER during its famous voyage of discovery (1872-1876). The collection includes the records of the American Tunaboat Association, which documents the tuna industry. The Archives also includes correspondence exchanged by founders E.W. Scripps, Ellen Browning Scripps, and William E. Ritter beginning in 1903 when they worked to establish a marine biological station in San Diego. Contact: SIO Archives, siolib2@sio.ucsd.edu
