She saw the sloping grade to the east and to the west from Milton square. A plan was forming. In this plan she could see that with her love of horses, a legacy could be left to her Town for generations to come. Miss Killam contacted Mr. J.L. Mott, a designer in New York, and expressed her wishes. Mr. Mott designed for her a very useful Public Drinking Fountain. Atop stood a beautiful prancing black stallion. The fountain had two drinking troughs for horses and cattle. It had four smaller and lower troughs for dogs and sheep. Drinking faucets flowed contiually from the mouth of a moulded dog head. the overflow filled the other troughs automatically. Cups were attached to be handy for the thirsty passer-by. This splendid gift was placed on its base on May 20th, 1893. The horse first faced north. Later the base was moved to the westward to widen Main street, then the horse faced east. With automobiles replacing horses, and cattle being cared for in herds, the need for water at the fountain reduced. Faucets were removed and replaced by a push button to allow the water to flow and then to shut off when the button was released. The cups were also removed, but one could quench his thirst from the moulded dog’s head well into the 1920’s.

    Extractions: Since 1773, when the ship Hector brought the first Scottish emigrants to Pictou in 1773, Nova Scotia was often the first and the preferred settlement area for Scottish emigrants, including those from "Inverness and the North" of Scotland, from the Western Isles, from the Highland region south of Inverness, from the lowlands, from Ireland as Ulster Scots, and even from the United States as United Empire Loyalists. These Scottish emigrants settled in every County of Nova Scotia and added a significant contribution to its rich cultural heritage. Many stayed in Nova Scotia, built new homes and worked long and hard to ensure their families would have a better life. Later, many among the second and subsequent generations moved westward throughout Canada, down to the United States, Australia and New Zealand, and other distant shores, to follow careers, fortune or the call of adventure. The high regard Scots in Nova Scotia had for education, from the days of the first pioneers to settle here, stood them in good stead whatever their profession. It is often said, and rightly so, that one of Nova Scotia's main exports has been (and still is) brainpower, its sons and daughters having achieved wide recognition in their chosen careers throughout North America and the world.

    Extractions: Co-Authored with Janet Gordon If you were shown three 19th century quilts made in the eastern U.S., another Wales, the last Nova Scotia, you'd find it difficult to determine which came from where. Nova Scotia, Canada, is at the furthest edge of North America. It lies between Britain and the United States, as a peninsula jutting out from New Brunswick. Surrounded by water, ships from far and near made their way bringing people, fabrics, and other goods to the settlers there. According to the book, the earliest inhabitants were the Mi'kmaq . The French established the first permanent European settlement in 1605, but Norse explorers and Basque fishermen had been there long before from across the Atlantic. At that time the region was loosely comprised of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and called Acadia. In 1713 the British fought the French for Acadia and won. In 1749 they built a large seaport in Halifax for their main defense against the French, who had taken back their fortress in Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island under the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. But the British got it back and secured all of Nova Scotia by 1758. It remained in their hands from then on. They proceeded to encourage and arrange for Swiss and German immigrants to settle in Halifax, the capitol, and subsequently in Lunenburg, further south on the Atlantic coast. The Scots came later, in 1773, to settle in Cape Breton and Pictou County.

    Extractions: Canada was founded by two founding nations, French and English. The French established the first North American French Settlement at Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605. They were eventually deported from Nova Scotia beginning in 1755. We know them as the Acadians. (Cajuns in USA) The first English settlement in Pictou County was by the Philadelphia Company in 1767 when they sent thirty-five people, six families of Scottish and Irish-Scottish origin on the ship Betsey from Philadelphia and Maryland to settle on their land in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The second wave came from Scotland to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1773 when the Hector arrived to a heavily forested and unsettled land. The earlier immigrants were tradesmen and self supporting. Later arrivals came because the Lords in Scotland who owned the land made them leave, know as the infamous Clearances, as it was more profitable to raise sheep than be paid for the lands use by the tenants. My family can trace their Genealogy roots to both of these early settlements and founding peoples.

In 1721 "a General Court or Court of Judicature" was established at Annapolis Royal, consisting of the Governor and his Council. This court continued to exercise civil and criminal jurisdiction until the establishment of a regular court in 1749 after the founding of Halifax. A committee of the Council in 1749 reported that the judicial system of Virginia was the "most proper to be observed in the Province." Two courts were established: The General Court composed of the Governor and Council, with civil, criminal and exchequer jurisdiction and to hear appeals from the County Court. A County Court composed of five Justices of the Peace sitting monthly with jurisdiction over the whole province, which then comprised one county. This court had jurisdiction over common law matters except those punishable by death or outlawry. The name was changed in 1752 to the Inferior Court of Common Pleas.
