Extractions: The author of many books for readers of all ages, Yoshiko Uchida was especially noted for her graceful, inspiring celebration of Japanese culture and her Japanese American heritage. Uchida was born in 1921 in Alameda, California, and grew up in the nearby city of Berkeley. Uchida's parents were born in Japan and had immigrated to the United States some years before. Thus Yoshiko was a nisei The Dancing Kettle After attending local schools, Uchida enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley. As she was studying for her final exams on Sunday, December 7, 1941, news came over the radio that Japanese forces had attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The United States immediately entered World War II against Japan and Germany. Less than three months later, the federal government issued an order requiring that Japanese Americans be evacuated from their homes and imprisoned indefinitely at "Wartime Relocation Agency (WRA) camps." This policy was known as internment. In early May 1942, the Uchida family was uprooted to a makeshift barracks surrounded by barbed wire at a racetrack. After five months there, they were sent to Topaz, a WRA camp in the Utah desert. Uchida later recorded in a number of works her family's experiences. In May 1943, she was released from Topaz in order to begin a graduate fellowship at Smith College in Massachusetts. Shortly afterwards, her parents were also released. 40 years later, in 1983, a government commission concluded that a "grave injustice" had been done to Japanese Americans, who were overwhelmingly loyal to their adopted land. The commission declared that the causes of internment were race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.

Extractions: I was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, geologically an "island in the prairie." My anthropological research on the cultures of Norway, Wales, Scotland and England eventually led me to a study of immigrants who settled in Iowa. I wrote the chapter on Welsh-Americans in American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation (David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors; Macmillan, 1997, pp.935-941). I am also writing a series of brief biographies of successful Welsh-Americans for an encyclopedia of notable immigrants. In addition to studying those who settled on the prairies, I am active in environmental conservation in central Iowa, where I own a farm. I helped establish an organization of Grinnell residents dedicated to the conservation and restoration of a large tract of Iowa woodland, grassland, and streams. I think we showed the world that nonviolence can work to make social change." Dolores Huerta is the most prominent Chicana (Mexican American woman) labor leader in the United States. She is cofounder and first vice president of the United Farm Workers union. For more than thirty years she has dedicated her life to the struggle for justice and dignity for migrant farm workers. Honored with countless community service, labor, Hispanic, and women's awards, Huerta is a role model for Mexican American women. Dolores Fernandez Huerta was born in 1930 in the small mining town of Dawson in northern New Mexico. She was the second child and only daughter of Juan Fernandez and Alicia Chaves Fernandez. Her mother's parents had been born in New Mexico, while her father's parents had immigrated to America from Mexico. When Huerta was a toddler her parents divorced, and she moved to California with her mother and two brothers. Active Childhood As a single parent during the Great Depression (a severe economic slowdown in America during the 1930s), Alicia Chaves Fernandez had a difficult time supporting her young family. While she worked at a cannery at night and as a waitress during the day, her father helped watch the children. The young Huerta enjoyed a close relationship with her grandfather.
