Fort Simpson Heritage Park is managed by the Fort Simpson Historical Society who care for the restored MacPherson House, and who carry out public events and heritage activities within the park and in the community. It is thought that the early 20th century Northwest Company Fort of the Forks (1803-1811) might have been located near the park. To learn more about this Mackenzie Valley community of 1200 visit the Fort Simpson web page. Work planned in the park for the summer of 2003 is aimed at more fully exploring the possible cellar or ice house that was identified there in 2002 with the hope of discovering the exact nature of the feature and of finding artifacts which could more precisely date the structure. Additionally, there is a possibility of conducting a ground penetrating radar survey of the site area in order to determine whether other such deeply buried features still exist. In this way future work can be more expedient and focussed on known features. (Report 2002) Dr. Pilon would welcome volunteers to assist in this work and to introduce them to the fascinating history of this northern settlement, its incredibly rich environment on the MacKenzie River, and the wonderful people who make Fort Simpson their home. Volunteers can expect to meet many local residents and share their culture and heritage in a very unique way.

The N.W.T. government to a large extent has the same responsibilities as provincial governments: taxation, municipal bodies, education, wildlife, health and hospital services, forest management, housing, social services and economic development. It is the only jurisdiction in Canada that does not operate on a political party structure, and is the only Legislative Assembly that follows a system of consensus government. This means that each member is free to vote as he/she wishes on any issue and approval of each issue requires agreement by a majority of members. It lacks jurisdiction over land and resource administration, including control over the pace and scale of resource development, and subsurface and water rights. Extractions: Economy The Northwest Territories (NWT) lie north of the 60th parallel, above Saskatchewan, Alberta, and eastern British Columbia, and between the Yukon and Nunavut. These dimensions represent a recent change. With the creation of Nunavut on April 1, 1999, the area of the former Northwest Territories, which stretched from the Yukon east to Baffin Island and included all of the Arctic archipelago, was reduced by approximately two-thirds, from 3 426 320 km2 to 1 171 918 km2. This is not the first time that the Northwest Territories has undergone dramatic boundary changes. At one point or another during the NWT's history, it has included all of Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Yukon and most of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Like the Yukon, the Northwest Territories can be divided into two broad geographical regions: the taiga, a boreal forest belt that circles the subarctic zone; and the tundra, a rocky Arctic region where the cold climate has stunted vegetation. Remarkable features include the Great Bear Lake, which at 31 328 km2 is the eighth largest in the world; the Great Slave Lake, the tenth largest in the world at 28 568 km2; and the Mackenzie River (Canada's longest), which flows 4 241 kilometres from the Great Slave Lake to the Beaufort Sea. The ancestors of the Dene Indian people lived along the Mackenzie Valley in the NWT 10 000 years ago. The first Inuit people are believed to have crossed the Bering Strait about 5 000 years ago, spreading east along the Arctic coast.

Extractions: The history of the political, constitutional and territorial evolution of the Northwest Territories is closely tied to the history of Saskatchewan Manitoba Alberta , the Yukon Territory and Nunavut . To understand the evolution of the Northwest Territories we know today, we must examine the territory's complex history. The exploration of the Far North centred largely on the search for the Northwest Passage, a water route over North America that could potentially be used as a trade route to the eastern hemisphere. European exploration of the Arctic began in the mid 1500s and continued until the early 20th century. It would lead to a greater understanding of the geography of Canada's North and of the value of the natural resources found there. In 1897, Wilfrid Laurier's government was the first to take concrete action to assert Canada's sovereignty in the Arctic Archipelago. Prime Minister Laurier sent William Wakeham there to establish Canadian jurisdiction. From 1903 to 1911, the expeditions of A. P. Low and J.-E. Bernier maintained a Canadian presence in these isolated territories.
