Extractions: January 24, 2000 (MINOT, ND) High-tech companies faced with a shortage of skilled workers may soon find their best and brightest prospects in North Dakota high schools. Six high schools across the state are now piloting ExplorNet's Computer Recycling (CPR) Project. Through this workforce development curriculum students learn how to rebuild donated computers - literally taking the machines apart and analyzing, testing, and replacing the components. They also learn how to build computers "from scratch." The multimedia machines the students assemble are then deployed to classrooms and media centers throughout their school district, which enables other students to become technologically capable. Seventeen students are currently enrolled in the CPR Project at Minot High School. Many say the unique hands-on approach to teaching computers has piqued their interest to learn more about technology.
