Extractions: January 24, 2000 (MINOT, ND) High-tech companies faced with a shortage of skilled workers may soon find their best and brightest prospects in North Dakota high schools. Six high schools across the state are now piloting ExplorNet's Computer Recycling (CPR) Project. Through this workforce development curriculum students learn how to rebuild donated computers - literally taking the machines apart and analyzing, testing, and replacing the components. They also learn how to build computers "from scratch." The multimedia machines the students assemble are then deployed to classrooms and media centers throughout their school district, which enables other students to become technologically capable. Seventeen students are currently enrolled in the CPR Project at Minot High School. Many say the unique hands-on approach to teaching computers has piqued their interest to learn more about technology.

Despite the U.S. fiscal crisis, an overwhelming majority of North Dakotans (94%) strongly support basic research that helps the United States maintain its world leadership in scientific endeavors. More than half the state's residents say they are aware of political candidates' voting records on medical, health and scientific research and 89 percent say they would vote for a political candidate who agrees that research is a high priority over one who does not.

"Things that other people take for granted, you just can't do when you live on a farm on the Plains." Call it the lure of the multiplex. North Dakota's young people say that what makes for a wonderful childhood can be an inhospitable environment for young adults. North Dakota is the only state that lost population from 2000 to 2003. Young people are leaving for cities and suburbs elsewhere. Unlike migrants from many northern industrial cities, North Dakota's youths are fleeing prosperity, not economic decline. North Dakota has the nation's lowest unemployment rate: 3.2% vs. 5.6% nationally. It created jobs throughout the recession and the so-called jobless recovery. Wages and personal income are rising faster than the national average, which means the new jobs pay more than the old ones.

Extractions: North Dakota's sodomy law was repealed effective 1975. However, there are no openly LGBT state officials, nor are there hate crime laws protecting LGBT people. On the other hand, North Dakota does not bar gays and lesbians from adoption or foster parenting. In terms of our feel for the state's reception to our efforts, in North Dakota's case it was favorable. In response to our very first query back in September of 1994, North Dakota sent back enough information to obviate the need for any further inquiries. The tone of the response was professional and very helpful. They even included a full page of contacts should we have further questions.
