The Wake Forest University School of Medicine and The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Incorporated, together constitute The Medical Center, which is under the overall supervision of a joint board of university trustees and trustees of the North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Incorporated. Other units of The Medical Center include the Brenner Children's Hospital, the School of Allied Health, and the Northwest Area Health Education Center. The Executive Vice President for Health Affairs/Executive Dean is responsible for the operation of the medical school to the President of Wake Forest University. The medical school and hospital buildings join to form a single unit, resulting in close correlation of clinical and basic medical science in both teaching and research. The Medical Center recently completed its $200-million Equation for Progress building program, adding an eleven-story Clinical Sciences Building, a fifteen-story hospital wing (North Tower), and a six-floor addition to the Hanes Research Building. The Nursing Center at Oak Summit, a 170-bed facility for skilled and intermediate nursing care, opened off campus in mid-July 1993. Three additional major construction projects are in progress: the J. Paul Sticht Institute for Rehabilitation and Aging, the eleven-floor Center for Research on Human Nutrition and Chronic Disease Prevention, and a ten-floor emergency department/dietary services building.
