Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services received a $77,303 grant to start a pilot program that will help low-income seniors in six counties purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Pilot Program will distribute coupons to an estimated 2,454 low-income seniors in Halifax, Northampton, Robeson, Wake, Columbus and Guilford counties. Seniors will receive two sets of coupons during the growing season to purchase a total of $42 worth of fresh produce from local growers. The grant money comes from a total of nearly $15 million the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded to 31 states across the country. This program encourages low-income seniors to improve their diets, while providing additional markets for local growers. "We are very excited to receive this grant money. Its a win-win situation for seniors and farmers," Agriculture Commissioner Meg Scott Phipps said. "Seniors can buy fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables from farmers in their community.
