The Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine are pleased to announce the availability of data from the 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1997 China Health and Nutrition Survey. The survey was conducted by an international team of researchers whose backgrounds include nutrition, public health, economics, sociology, Chinese studies, and demography. The survey took place over a 3-day period using a multistage, random cluster process to draw a sample of about 3800 households with a total of 16,000 individuals in nine provinces that vary substantially in geography, economic development, public resources, and health indicators. In addition, detailed community data were collected in surveys of food markets, health facilities, family planning officials, and other social services and community leaders. The China Health and Nutrition Survey was designed to examine the effects of the health, nutrition, and family planning policies and programs implemented by national and local governments and to see how the social and economic transformation of Chinese society is affecting the health and nutritional status of its population. The impact on nutrition and health behaviors and outcomes is gauged by changes in community organizations and programs as well as by changes in sets of household and individual economic, demographic, and social factors.

Extractions: Inside AHIP State Tracking Gateway ... Inside AHIP > Healthplan Magazine By Dennis Arp As someone who works at the front lines of the fight against obesity in America, Shellie Pfohl has encountered a bushel of misinformation on nutrition and exercise over the years. But even she was shocked by a study of preschoolers in North Carolina. Four- and 5-year-olds were shown pictures and asked to identify various foods. Most knew what corn was-when it was shown in a can. But they had no idea what the yellow stuff was when it was pictured still on the cob. The same goes for peaches: Most recognized a can and its contents in heavy syrup. But when the fruit was shown whole, freshly picked from a tree, the youngsters simply couldn't make the connection. The resulting program is bearing substantial fruit of its own. The tools consist of 15 lesson plans that target a specific aspect of nutrition or physical activity. But for the children, the most important aspect is the fun they have along the way. Be Active Kids is now part of the curriculum in more than 6,000 childcare centers in 97 of North Carolina's 100 counties-reflecting its popularity not only with children but also with providers. The program is expected to be in all 100 counties by the end of 2003.

While studies debate how to apportion blame among potential causal agents, a consensus has emerged that trends in childhood obesity bode poorly for the health status of children now and as they age to maturity.
