Most of the class time will be spent in reading and discussing, learning to enjoy the poetry of selected North Carolina poets. This study will better equip the teacher to go into the classroom and guide his/her students in appreciating and enjoying poetry. It will also help the teacher to be better prepared to lead the students in discovering more about their North Carolina literary heritage. Our six schools are located in a small, mostly rural county in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The Polk County Board of Education has established and follows a long-range facility plan. Polk County High School, built in 1992, has a recently enlarged cafeteria, new field house and fine arts wing. A consolidated middle school for grades 6-8 is under construction, along with renovations to other schools. High school students may take Advanced-Placement English, science, history and math courses. They may earn college credits before graduation and also participate in sports, clubs, music and drama. Every school has a fully equipped and staffed computer lab and media center. Four year old children may attend one of the model preschool programs in each of our elementary schools. Resources are available to all children, from three year-old handicapped to academically gifted, who qualify for special education.
