Extractions: FirstHealth of the Carolinas, in collaboration with Montgomery County Schools and Sandhills Center for Mental Health, will establish a comprehensive school-based health center at East Middle School in Montgomery County, located in rural central North Carolina (62.2 percent Caucasian, 27.8 African American, 6.8 Asian, 3 percent Hispanic, and less than 1 percent Native American). For the adolescent target population, the project aims to improve access to care, to create comprehensive services, and to deliver more preventive care. FirstHealth plans to seek parental and community support throughout the project. West Middle School, with a student enrollment of 589, serves sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. It is located between two towns (Mt. Gilead, population 1,361 and Troy, population 3,628). The ethnic makeup is diverse with an increasing number of Hispanic and Asian children. Health care access is limited due to lack of transportation, limited hours of operation, facilities that are not "teen friendly," and cost of services.

Extractions: Introduction Taking a Good Look at Instructional Technology (TAGLIT) is a set of assessments and reports designed to help school personnel understand the current status of technology use in their schools. TAGLIT includes surveys for school technology leaders, teachers and students. During the fall semester of 2003, our school completed a TAGLIT assessment. School Technology Leaders: Nicole A. Howard, principal, completed TAGLIT for School Technology Leaders. Vernetta Wallace-Victor, tech. coordinator, assisted with some of the data. Teachers: Five out of seven teachers completed TAGLIT for Teachers. Students: No students completed TAGLIT for students because our small population did not lend itself to student participation. This page provides a summary of some of the findings from TAGLIT. A list of some of the strengths of our school technology program and an action plan that details an area for further work. Although hardware, software and connectivity are important elements of a school technology program, they are not the focus of this page. Elements such as planning, student use, professional development and community involvement receive attention here. Current Status TAGLIT results are presented on a 4-point developmental scale.

Mike Easley released his mid-biennium budget term adjustments yesterday, which he said maintained his priorities for spending discipline, creating jobs, and improving public education. Forecasters anticipate economic growth by a rate of 5.5 percent for 2004-05, which raised revenue expectations by $200 million. Easleys revised budget comes in at almost $15.9 billion. Increased spending over last year includes $119 million for education enrollment, $231 million for state employee retirees and health coverage, $220 million for pay increases, and $80 million for servicing debt and capital expenditures. Also, last years temporary Medicaid relief from the federal government was removed, so state spending on it will increase by $182 million. RALEIGH Video poker. The lottery. Balancing the budget. The leaders in the state House have said they will focus on getting the budget done and getting lawmakers home by the first week of July. Many will be in primaries July 20.

First allow me to bring you up to date with the development of the Project. As you know, Johnston County Schools is hosting a survey conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). To establish the prevalence of ADHD, parents and teachers of children in grades 1-5 will participate in the survey. In December, 1997, Kate B. Reynolds funded a 3 year program to establish training and education for parents, professionals, and the community. Recognizing the need for services for the ADHD child, a clinical team from UNC-CH, Department of Psychiatry, is working with AHEC to address community needs. This trained staff will establish a mobile clinic to assist with the medical diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. In concert with the Johnston County Medical Society, protocols are being established for collaboration and training of area doctors that treat and manage ADHD. Presently, eight schools have completed the NIEHS survey and will be offered training and educational programs. An educational protocol will allow the Task Force, Steering Committee, and the Advisory Committees, to work together to plan and provide:
