The mission of the association is to: The North Carolina Pecan Growers Association has approximately 150 members including 100 active growers. Farm size varies from the "backyard tree" to orchards of 1500 new and improved varieties. Orchards are located in 45 Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina counties with the highest concentration in Sampson, Wayne, Pamlico, Lenoir and Columbus counties. Six different states are represented in the membership with the South Carolina growers contributing approximately 6,000 trees to the total of 20,000 trees under active management by members. Membership dues are modest and are based on the number of trees under management. All pecan enthusiasts are welcome to join. Extractions: www.dare.k12.nc.us More than 4,500 elementary and secondary students from Corolla to Hatteras Island attend one of the nine Dare County schools four elementary schools, two middle schools, one combination middle and high school, one high school, and one alternative high school. There are some unusual situations in the Dare County Schools. One is that the only high school for the northern Outer Banks is at the far end of Manteo, up to an hour's drive for students who live in Corolla, Duck, and Kitty Hawk. Another has to do with students who live in Corolla. Corolla is in Currituck County and does not have its own school. The Currituck County schools are across the sound, an easy trip by boat but a lengthy trip by land. Corolla had its own small two-room school that opened in the late 1800s, but it was closed in 1958 when the population of the village dwindled. Dare County transports students to and from the Currituck Outer Banks to its schools via bus all the way to Manteo for the high-school students! Corolla students can spend several hours a day on the bus. As the population of year-round residents grows, the Dare County Board of Education is constantly besieged with finding new ways to meet the demands of more students. With almost every one of the current schools at, near, or over capacity, the biggest goal is more space. A new elementary school opened fall 2002 on Hatteras Island. A second new school in Dare County is being planned: a $30 million high school that will be located in Kill Devil Hills, much to the pleasure of families who live in the beach communities. The new high school will be a 156,000- square-foot facility with classrooms, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, and athletic fields. Planned for a September 2004 opening, the school will have a 1,200-student capacity, though the board of education expects 800 students at opening. Work began on the new high school in the summer of 2002. Manteo High School will remain open when the beach high school opens.

Extractions: You are here: Home Staff Resources Echoes February 2004 4-H Day is a long-standing tradition established in the mid-1960's to honor 4-H youth and the Colorado 4-H program. Each year one state representative and one state senator from the Colorado legislature present a resolution to proclaim the first Monday in February as 4-H Day. Representative Diane Hoppe from Sterling and Senator Jack Taylor from Steamboat Springs were the legislators who provided this support for the resolutions this year. Governor Owens has also proclaimed February 2 as 4-H Day in Colorado. Nearly 200 4-Hers were in the Capitol on Monday for tours and other activities, as well as being recognized in the two bodies of the Colorado General Assembly as the resolutions were presented and passed. Several legislators stepped up to the microphone and made comments about their support of and experience in 4-H in a very positive way. President Larry Penley and Vice Provost Marc Johnson joined me, along with Dale Leidheiser and the 4-Hers in the Capitol for these activities. Overall it was a great day for 4-H and Cooperative Extension. Recently I asked each county office to provide information regarding the scholarships available to their local 4-H members sponsored either at the county level or through the state 4-H office. I thought you might find the following summary of those findings to be of interest. I think we should be pleased to see such a high level of funding available to our 4-H members to further their educations at institutions of higher learning. The complete report is available at:
