Louisburg College , which was chartered in 1787, is our second oldest institution of private higher education. Charter school students in elementary grades exhibited faster achievement growth than traditional public school students. Unfortunately, those individuals who allocate funding or determine our roles don't often understand or appreciate what we have to offer. Whatever our specialty might be, we are often too busy to communicate these to individuals who might help us the most. This year I'd like to ask for your help in doing three things to bring about a better understanding and greater knowledge of our field. If we don't accept this challenge, I fear that we will see our numbers decline. The second thing I would like to ask you to do is to advocate for our profession and your division. At our June changeover meeting, Donna Henderson defined an advocate as, "….one who defends or maintains a cause." How can we expect others to appreciate and value our services if we cannot articulate these to mental health commissioners, boards of education, public officials, and to the public, in general? I will be the first to say that I would like to know more about the issues of each division under NCCA. As the "voice" for your division, speak up loudly. Write letters or articles, offer to speak at public functions, promote training opportunities. These are vehicles for advocating what is important to you.
