The school that sat at the end of Academy Street was the life of the community, and the commencements were marked by day-long events that featured picnics on the grounds. Hundreds of young people, both Cary natives and out-of-towners, walked through the hallways of that school over the years, and Cary streets bear the names of beloved principals like Dry and Middleton. By 1907, Cary High had earned the distinction of becoming the state's first public high school. Innovation in Education While Cary may have changed a great deal throughout the 20th century, its commitment, interest and support of education remains strong. Wake County is well known for its innovation in education, and magnet schools are among the country's best success stories. Offering programs in international studies, language arts and communications, gifted and talented, and classical studies, as well as extended day and year-round programs, magnet schools give parents choices. Quality Public Schools Year-round education is another state first for Cary. When Kingswood Elementary opened in July, 1989, it was the first year-round school in North Carolina and the nation's only year-round magnet. While Kingswood today is no longer a year-round school, four of the seven Wake County year-round programs are in the Cary-Apex area. For high school students with advanced skills and motivation, the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is but a few minutes away in Durham, and Cary is generally represented there each fall.

    Extractions: Emancipation from slavery in 1865 offered a new and prosperous lifestyle for some African Americans in North Carolina. Some became landowners or politicians; others started their own businesses. Yet by 1900 "jubilation" had become "Jim Crow" and African Americans once again found themselves treated as an inferior race. During this period, however, African American leaders were emerging who dedicated themselves to improving the status and quality of life for African American citizens. One such person was Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown. The granddaughter of former slaves, Lottie Hawkins was born in Henderson, North Carolina in 1883. During her childhood, the Hawkins family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Lottie attended Cambridge English High School and Salem State Normal School. While she was a student at Salem State, the American Missionary Association offered her a teaching position in North Carolina. Dissatisfied with the lack of educational opportunities for African Americans in the South, Hawkins accepted. The eighteen year-old returned to North Carolina in 1901 to teach rural black children at the Bethany Congregational Church in Sedalia, Guilford County. The school closed after one term, but young Hawkins decided to remain in the community and establish her own school. In 1902, after vigorously raising money in the New England area, Charlotte Hawkins founded Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, a day and boarding school for African Americans. Established in a converted blacksmith's shop, the school was named in memory of Alice Freeman Palmer, Charlotte's friend and chief benefactor. Mrs. Palmer was also the second woman president of Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Under the leadership of Charlotte Hawkins Brown, Palmer Memorial Institute became a nationally recognized and respected preparatory school for African Americans.

    Extractions: Somerset Place is a representative antebellum plantation offering an insightful view of life during the period before the Civil War. During its eighty-year existence as an active plantation (1785-1865), it encompassed as many as 100,000 acres and became one of North Carolina's most prosperous rice, corn, and wheat plantations. It was home to more than three hundred enslaved men, women, and children of African descent- eighty of whom were brought to Somerset directly from their West African homeland in 1786. These native African slaves had firsthand knowledge of rice cultivation. Members of the enslaved community dug a system of irrigation and transportation canals; built a sawmill, gristmills, barns, stables, work buildings, and dwelling houses; and cultivated fields. The plantation operated as a business investment for more than forty years. In 1829 it became home to two generations of a planter family: Josiah Collins III, his wife Mary, and their six sons. Josiah III inherited the property from his grandfather, Josiah I, who along with two partners had aquired the land and planned its early development. When the Civil War ended in 1865, so did slavery in the United States. Left without unpaid labor, planters such as the Collins family could no longer maintain the plntation system that had characterized the antebellum South.

His mother, Caroline Archimbaut-Dufays gave birth to Charles when she was 28-years-old to a much older man Francois Baudelaire of sixty-one. Charles' father instilled in him an appreciation for art. Francois Baudelaire's best friends were artists and he often took his young son to museums and galleries. Charles often sat by his father's side at his easel to watch his father paint. Some of Charles' earliest memories were of the times his father took him to the Palace of the Luxembourg to explain the statues that were there. Baudelaire twice stated, "Pictures, my only, my greatest and my earliest passion (Shanks 7)." When Charles was six, his father died and Charles became very attached to his mother.
