   Extractions: The “A Grammarian” chapter of How to Write by Gertrude Stein, begins with these statements: I am a Grammarian. We will or we will not cry together. These. Have not a cousin. These have a cousin she is a nun. What are we to make of these words? How seriously should we study their elusive meaning? If Gertrude Stein is the grammarian, why does she break the rules of grammar – at least four times in these first four lines? (Grammarian should not be capitalized. “These” and “Have not a cousin” are sentence fragments. “These” has no antecedent.)
