Extractions: Main April 01, 2004 The Nobel Peace Prize Isn't Worth A Warm Saucer Of Spit Back on November 5, 2002 I started a little project called the Henderson Prize for the Advancement of Liberty . (I picked that day because it falls on my birthday, not because of Guy Fawkes Day.) The March 31 winners are announced here I'll post some commentary on the prize later this week. For now I want to reprint the October 14, 2002 post that inspired creation of the prize. I have essentially two criticisms of the prize. First, it awards intentions before results have been achieved. Second, there is no rigid definition of "peace" stated in either the name of the prize (as in a hypothetical "peace and freedom award") or in the Nobel guidelines. The committee often fails to distinguish between the short-term peace of appeasement and the long-term peace that is a byproduct of liberty, and it sometimes uses "peace" synonymously with something that it is not, like "fighting for liberty" (re: Shirin Ebadi) or "improving the physical human condition" (re: Norman Borlaug ). Until long-term peace and liberty can be tied to them, what they really deserve now are a Dissidents Prize and a Screw Paul Ehrlich, I'm Saving People's Lives Prize, respectively.

Extractions: The Foto Novela: Socially Conscious Comic Books A comic book with a conscience? That would be the foto novela also known as a historieta an illustrated novel that addresses social concerns and has become a staple of pop culture in Latino communities. These are not unlike U.S. educational cartoon pamphlets and comic books used to discuss topics such as drug safety, violence prevention, literacy, and even religion. Refer students to "Historietas de la Vida Real/Real Life Comics" at http://www.pbs.org/itvs/fotonovelas/poliester.html ; "About Historietas" at http://www.pbs.org/itvs/fotonovelas/genre.html , and "Socially Conscious Comic Books" at http://www.sideroad.com/comics/column32.html to learn more about the history and role of the foto novela and comics with "purpose." Locate examples of foto novelas or socially conscious comic books. (Health and advocacy organizations often produce such materials to educate the public about a particular issue.) Or, invite students to find samples by contacting organizations, libraries, universities, etc. Instruct students to review and compare these samples to identify themes, formats, potential audiences, messages delivered, etc. Have students list issues or causes that interest them. Divide the class into groups and ask them to select a topic. Instruct students to research and then create a foto novela on their topic. (All group members should contribute to the publication's writing, illustrations, and design.) Groups might consider sharing a draft of their work with an expert in their topic's field to ensure accuracy. Encourage students to find and negotiate a venue for the distribution of their foto novela. For example, comic books focused on a health issue might be distributed at a community heath organization.

Professional Resources Picture Books: TAYLOR, Cora Out on the Prairie: A Canadian Counting Book Illustrated by Pat Stephens. North Winds Press/Scholastic, 2002. Unp. Illus. Gr. Preschool-2. 0-439-98840-3. Hdbk. $19.99 Rating: E How fortunate for readers that one of Canada's most established children's fiction authors has turned her pen to picture books as well. Cora Taylor's adaptation of Over in the Meadow has all the warmth of the original verse, and Pat Stevens, who has illustrated several non-fiction books, interprets Taylor's verse with beautiful acrylic full-colour, double page illustrations. Each verse begins, "Out on the prairie" and presents a series of mother animals commanding offspring to carry out various activities. As in the original rhyme, the animals number from one to ten. From the mother and baby antelope leaping in the warm spring sun to the mother coyote nuzzling with her ten babies as she softly admonishes them to go to sleep, the depiction of mother and baby animals is gentle, while the little ones show spunkiness that children will identify with. Meadowlark babies sing "Tweet-a-bow", tadpoles wiggle, baby deer mice squeak and squirm " 'neath a tangle of twine". The individuality of each baby and enjoyment of activities with the mothers is so nicely portrayed by Stevens, making this a good choice either to share with a child or to read aloud. The illustrations also give many details about the animals and their habitats.
Extractions: (opens in a new window) Editor's Note : An alternative version of this article was published in different form in the February 2001 issue of ACM-SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics. Recognition in the Old Tradition " 'I didn't expect ' a Nobel Prize 'at all,' he said, 'in part because of the nature of the work. There was less science [and more engineering] in it than the things customarily honored by the prizes." This is the observation of Jack S. Kilby (Texas Instruments) co-inventor of the integrated circuit, on being notified of his award in October 2000. The Nobel Prize for chemistry awarded at the same time to Alan J. Heeger (UC-Santa Barbara) and Hideki Shirakawa (University of Tsukuba) for their work on conductive polymers also reflected the recognition of broad effects rather than pure science. " 'We're very excited,' said Daryle H. Busch of the American Chemical Society, 'because this award is in the old tradition. That is, it was given for work that has a very substantial impact on society.' " (Suplee) The shift back to an earlier tradition by the Nobel prize committee may reflect a growing recognition in the larger world of the deep value of applied work of broad impact as opposed to the highly theoretical work of relatively low impact which has commanded such high prestige in recent decades.
