Business Editors CINCINNATI(BUSINESS WIRE)Jan. 14, 2002 While spring may seem far away, to New Jersey teachers and students, an April deadline looms. Thousands of New Jersey teachers and millions of students are diligently preparing for New Jerseys Elementary School Proficiency Assessment (ESPA) tests, which will be administered April 29 - May 3, 2002. Now New Jersey students, teachers and parents can add another tool to their test preparation repertoire. OPTIMUM(R) for ESPA is an interactive CD-ROM that helps students prepare for state assessment tests by providing sample tests and questions in specific subject areas aligned with New Jersey Department of Education guidelines. OPTIMUM for ESPA CD-ROMs cover fourth grade language arts literacy, math, science and fifth grade social studies. An eighth grade (GEPA) test preparation tool is in development. Teachers and schools can purchase OPTIMUM in single units ($29.95), Lab Packs of 5 or Site Licenses for 30. Special fundraising discounts and incentives are available for PTAs and PTOs. The ESPA is a diagnostic tool that tells teachers and parents how well students are progressing in obtaining the skills and knowledge required under New Jerseys rigorous academic standards. Additionally, New Jersey students are required to pass the state-mandated, eleventh-grade High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) test before graduating from high school. As schools are often ranked by how their students perform, many devote copious time to annual test preparation. OPTIMUM software is a valuable resource that can help teachers identify students academic weaknesses and ensure they get specialized help.

Extractions: Is our sense of community eroding? A review of the new book by sociologist Robert Putnam . Benjamin R. Barber is director of the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy, at Rutgers University. He is the author of "Jihad vs. McWorld" (Ballantine) and "A Passion for Democracy" (Princeton), among other works. Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. F IVE YEARS AGO Ever since, Putnam has been trying to make wise use of the funds in which his social capital project has been awash, hiring scores of researchers, running high-end seminars, scrutinizing a century of survey materials while simultaneously defending the flanks of his argument from ongoing assault, misunderstanding and abuse. The result is "Bowling Alone" (the book!), subtitled "The Collapse and Revival of American Community," although there is far more here about the collapse that has actually occurred than about the "revival" Putnam so earnestly wishes for. Now, I have been both a general admirer of Putnam's thesis about social decline in the original essay and a specific critic of the way he set about measuring that decline and how he explained it. But it is hard to remain skeptical in light of the formidable survey research and explanatory work Putnam has done. Indeed, he has taken what was a useful political polemic (we're losing faith in our political and civic system and each other!) and transformed it into a powerful sociological portrait of a democracy in imminent decline-a portrait as perspicacious, deeply felt and firmly rooted in data as the classic American portraits rendered in such works as "An American Dilemma," "Middletown" and "The Lonely Crowd."

The answer: school reform crosses political boundaries. People standing up to the education establishment include liberals, radicals, conservatives, ultra-conservatives, Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians. (The ranks of school reformers also include African-Americans, Hispanics, whites, Protestants, Catholics, Jews, rich people and poor people.) Here is a quick recap of how education reform meshes with some political and social concerns across the political spectrum.
