Haar made what she thought was a routine request to the National PTA, the reaction she received was so surprising it piqued the former public school teacher's curiosity to learn more about the century-old Parent-Teacher Association. Instead of a parent organization dedicated to the enhancement of the nation's schools, Haar discovered a group dominated by teacher unions and little attuned to the interests of parents and their children." (PDF) National PTA's Liberal Politics Cost Parental Support , February 2003. This report from the Capital Research Center (CRC) concludes, "The national Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) lost a significant number of members in the last 40 years because of its focus on politics rather than education." What Next For The PTA? Parents Turn Away From The Century-Old Group by Mary Lord, U. S. News and World Report, May 31, 1999: "... When it comes to tackling the larger issues that affect the quality of education, parents are stuck on the sidelines. How do they get to influence the debate over academic standards and school choice? Who speaks for [them]? Not, it seems, the country's most venerated parent group - the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, or PTA. ... [One] reason the PTA is playing hooky on education reform ... may be its cozy relationship with the teachers unions."

Extractions: (August / September 2003) PTA? SEPTA? PTO? Are you confused by all of these acronyms? Do you wish there was someone who could explain the terms and the differences between each of these organizations? If so, your wish is about to come true. Let's start by defining the acronyms. Most people know that PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association. SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association and a SEPTSA includes the students. While PTO is shorthand for a Parent Teacher Organization. So now you know what the letters stand for, what do they mean to you as a parent? PTAs are local groups that affiliate with the national PTA, an organization with more than 6 million members nationwide and overseas. These local groups pay state and national dues, but in exhcnage, receive benefits from the state and national organizations. PTAs allow members to network with fellow members/volunteers who help one another, share resources and ideas. SEPTAs are community-wide organizations. They aren't associated with a single school, like the vast majority of PTAs. And unlike most PTAs, SEPTAs focus primarily on special education issues and advocacy for children with disabilities. National PTA first introduced the concept of SEPTA in 1996 to address the unique needs of parents of children with special needs. SEPTA members should also consider participating in their school PTA or PTO. School-based parent organizations can provide parent involvement opportunities that many SEPTAs do not.

Extractions: (April/May 2003) It can be quite easy for parents of children with special needs to become overwhelmed. Trying to prioritize everything from homework to teacher conferences, or from IEP development to soccer practice, can be a taxing venture for even the most energetic of parents. Now, for a number of reasons, some of the protections and services that our children have enjoyed over the years are now being put into question. And, as a parent of a child with special needs, it is imperative that you pay particular attention to the happenings in Washington, D.C., during this budget year. In the past few editions of Special Insights , we have shared information about the No Child Left Behind Act which continues to be shaped and formed, while also this year, Congress will have to reauthorize the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This comes in conjunction with several other pieces of important legislation that are coming up for reauthorization. To maintain critical services and protections your child needs, it is important that you communicate your concerns to your U.S. Senator and Respresentative, as well as your state Senator and Assemblyperson (if you are unsure who they are, call the League of Women Voters at 884-3550). Advocates, mostly parents of children with special needs, have had to strongly lobby in the past to help ensure that these protections stay in place. It appears to be that time again. Now, parents need to become more educated on what kind of impact decisions made in Washington and Albany can have on their child's educational and vocational programs. Following are some general tips when contacting public officials:

Through the McDonald's Together In Education grant program, McDonald's restaurant owners in the tri-state region are making $50,000 in grants available to fund programs or activities such as Family Science Nights and Family Book Sharing Clubs that "tie" parents back to the schools and help increase family participation in education. Teachers throughout the New York tri-state area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) are eligible to apply. Expanding on the success of last year's program, members of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) or Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) are also eligible to apply for matching grants to fund their own parent involvement activities. The project must be designed to include the families/parents of one class, grade, or school. Grant request amounts can range from $500 to $2,500. Additional information and applications can be found at the New York Tri-State McDonald's restaurants Web site.

Extractions: An interesting topic that could be localized by any paper. GERRY O'BRIEN, Butte By SANDRA KALLIO/Wisconsin State Journal While public schools have been criticized for racial and gender achievement gaps for decades, there's another gap under scrutiny parental involvement in schools, particularly among men and minorities. Nine of 10 Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members are women and more than eight in 10 are white, according to the national PTA. While the organization has come a long way in the century since it was founded as the National Congress of Mothers, it remains far from balanced demographically. That's why the PTA is piloting an Hispanic Outreach Initiative in California, Florida and Texas. The goal is to create a network of Latino leaders to reach out to Latino families, so they feel welcome to participate in their children's education. This is not just a warm, fuzzy concept. Research indicates that when parents are involved in schools, their children do better academically. Parent-teacher groups in the Madison School District seem to include more men than the national average but remain mighty white. According to a tally of board presidents and co-presidents listed on school district Web sites, about eight in 10 top officers are women. Those contacted for this story note few peers from minority populations, even though about four of every 10 students are minorities.

But her rendering of the famous icon of hope and freedom will soon be seen on the backs of those around the township as part of a local effort to raise funds for a campaign to repair the national monument. Kim is a Woodbridge High School senior who emigrated with her family from Korea to the United States in 1998. Her pen-and-ink depiction of Lady Liberty will be duplicated on thousands of T-shirts sold throughout the township. "While drawing the Statue of Liberty, I was thinking about how people wearing the T-shirts with my design and my signature would look, and it made me feel like Im a professional artist. So I put extra effort and time in this project," Kim said. Kim said she and her family emigrated from Korea for better education and broader job opportunities. She said language and cultural barriers made acclimation to American society difficult.
