Extractions: Forty percent of New York City children enrolled in a federal program to prevent malnutrition are overweight or in danger of becoming so, indicating a need to better target nutritional messages to these families, a new study finds. The study, which examined 2- to 4-year-old, low-income children in the New York City Neighborhood Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, found that 22 percent of the children were overweight and another 18 percent were at risk for becoming overweight, say Jennifer A. Nelson, M.P.H., of the Medical and Health Research Association of New York City and two colleagues. Their work appears in the American Journal of Public Health The researchers looked at children in the program (known as WIC) from various ethnic backgrounds. Fifty-nine percent of children in the study were Hispanic, 19 percent were black, 10 percent were Asian and 8 percent were white. Weight rose sharply with age among 2-year-olds, and Hispanic children were three times more likely to be overweight or at risk for being overweight compared to white children. Overall, the 3-year-old children were more likely to be overweight than the 2-year-olds. Only 8 percent of children aged 24 months to 29 months were overweight, but 19 percent of those aged 30 months to 35 months were in that category.
