The church will open its upper West Side temple Saturday for a month of public tours - giving a rare glimpse at the dazzlingly white rooms where Mormons perform their most solemn rituals. Visitors can see the marble pool where young Mormons immerse themselves to symbolically baptize their dead ancestors, as well as the altars where couples seal their marriages for eternity. Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Mormon church prefers to be called, hope the open house will demystify their growing religion, which has about 42,000 followers in the New York area and more than 5 million in the U.S. Only devoted Mormons will be allowed inside after it is dedicated June 13. Mormon churches are common but temples, which are reserved for special ceremonies, are not. "To a Latter-day Saint, the temple is the most sacred place on Earth," said temple President John Stone. "It is a building where we go to learn more about God and about the great questions of life: Why are we here? Where are we going? Where will we be going after this?"

Extractions: (CLOSED FOR RENOVATION UNTIL SEPT 2002) started ~1981, when it was discovered that St. David Zion church was the oldest church in Sag Harbor still on its original site, yet not included in the Sag Harbor Historical district. As further research began about the church it was discovered that many of the houses in Eastville held a great deal of history, and that the whole area should have been included into the district. Today, the entire whole Eastville community is on the National Register for Historical Places. Extractions: The Collegiate Church Charter Tercentennial Three hundred years ago, on May 11, 1696, King William III of England issued a charter to the Dutch Collegiate Church in New Amsterdam. By this charter the Reformed Dutch Church in New York, now known as the Collegiate Church, Was incorporated under the name of " The Minister, Elders and Deacons of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the City of New York ." This charter granted it many rights, including most importantly the right of freedom to exist as a Church, separate from the "official" Church of England. That important right, contrary to the style of the times, was a major philosophically and conceptual breakthrough which survives today. Many other rights were granted in this Charter, dealing with choices of church governance, civil corporate rights (the ability unilaterally to buy and sell property, for example), and similar matters. These rights have been preserved under the United States Constitution and New York State law and survives today. The Collegiate Church Corporation, the oldest Corporation in the United States, is today strong and an important ministry for Christ because of the many freedoms and rights granted in this modern, forward-looking charter which affects our lives today.
