(Photo by Randy Montoya) The initiative seeks to make the nation's school grounds safer for thousands of elementary, middle, and high school students by improving security on hundreds of school campuses. Efforts to improve school security have intensified following recent shootings at campuses across the country. Funding to establish the School Security Technology Center is included in the FY99 spending bill as part of Department of Justice appropriations. Sandia, a Department of Energy (DOE) research and development laboratory, will be invited to apply for the $1.4 million around the first of the calendar year. Bingaman first introduced legislation to create the Center in February, 1998.

Extractions: The University is located in Albuquerque in the center of the state along the spectacular Middle Rio Grande Valley. Albuquerque is the largest metropolitan area in New Mexico having a population of close to 600,000 people. The campus is in the heart of the city and includes more than 150 buildings on 600 acres. The unique Pueblo Revival and Territorial style of the campus architecture was established in 1933 when John Gaw Meem, holder of the first architectural license from the State of New Mexico, became the University Architect. Meem designed Zimmerman Library which opened in 1938. Since that time, the campus has maintained the original style as reflected in the numerous modern buildings built on the campus. The School of Architecture and Planning is an integral part of the University of New Mexico. While the University was founded by an act of the Territorial Legislature in 1889, the role of designing and building settlements in the Rio Grande valley has been prominent in the development of the region since statehood in 1912. The School has strong historic ties with both the College of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts on the main campus. Beginning in 1937, architecture was offered as a concentration in the College of Fine Arts, and at the end of World War II, building and technology pulled the program to the College of Engineering. In 1957, the Colleges of Engineering and Fine Arts formed a special division of architecture.
