Experiments are currently focused on three aspects of early embryogenesis: determining the role of the organizer, and other potential signaling centers, in formation of the body plan; analyzing the cell behaviors (and the molecules that control these behaviors) underlying the morphogenetic movements of gastrulation and neurulation; and elucidating the cell-cell interactions and molecular mediators causing regionalization of early ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal anlagen. Extractions: By Stephen Young Municipalities can design and maintain their own web sites, or they can find an outside vendor for the work. Which method is best? MuniNet recently contacted several city web administrators and asked about their experience. Of those who responded, many did the work in-house, some with the assistance of a vendor, while a couple reported relying completely on a vendor. Despite the different approaches, each municipality seemed to find satisfaction in their own arrangement. Some cities experimented with different formulas before finding an appropriate balance. In Ames, Iowa , initial reliance on a vendor didn't work out too well, according to Clare Bills, Public Relations Officer. "We started our site six years ago with only an outside firm. They were slow and sloppy and didn't edit their work. Their design also was a disaster and so we decided we could do better," said Bills. Now city staff handles the site, except for big design changes. Bills said the move made sense financially. "We save thousands each year by maintaining the web ourselves," she said. "The departments have a sense of ownership and can update the site daily. We've been able to put hundreds of items on the web that we probably wouldn't have if we were being charged $80/hr which is the going rate here."
