Extractions: Return to VDOE homepage Many Virginia K-12 educators use the instructional resources found via shared educational tools, such as school and division-wide computer networks and the Internet. The increased use of such resources requires that administrators, teachers, library media specialists, students, and parents take steps to ensure that when used responsibly, these tools and the resources found by them are appropriate for use in K-12 instruction. In response to these concerns, schools or school divisions are required to establish guidelines for the appropriate use of computer networks. Such guidelines are generally called an Acceptable Internet Use Policy, or AUP. By definition, an AUP is a written agreement in the form of guidelines, signed by students, their parents and their teachers, outlining the terms and conditions of Internet use-rules of online behavior and access privileges. To assist school divisions, we have created an electronic "handbook" of resources. Since schools are at various stages of implementation in the use of computer networks, this electronic handbook does not prescribe a single Acceptable Internet Use Policy. Instead, it provides links to various sources of information that may be helpful to administrators, teachers, library media specialists, and parents in the development of a local AUP. The Internet is a virtual community based simply on courtesy and commonsense. A local AUP reflects the circumstances unique to the school or division, the electronic system used, and clearly defines what constitutes local responsible use of information networks.

Extractions: Digital television allows New Mexico's public television stations the flexibility to present programs for all New Mexicans. Much like a museum cannot exhibit all its art and artifacts, public television stations have many more programs to offer than there are hours in the day. By dividing a station's broadcast signal into four or more parts, New Mexico Public Television can provide specialized educational programs to students as well as informational and entertainment programs for general audiences. Student Resources: Maria and two of her classmates in special education resource class need extra help as they prepare for a test on cardiovascular system in health. Using a digital receiver, Maria and her friends explore an interactive demonstration showing how the heart and lungs work. As they flow the path of blood, Maria downloads study sheets. Teacher Training: Tom's job is to investigate and recommend professional development tools for teachers and administrators in his school district. Tom always checks New Mexico Public Television's services first. Using programming and materials from the Adult Learning Service, The Business Channel, Mathline, and Scienceline, Tom is able to preview the program, download the preparatory materials and customize publicity materials for his district. In addition, New Mexico Public Television's web site has a bulletin board with user comments.

NEDCOMM Home Page The home site for new mexico Technet's NEDCOMM program, which gives free Internet access to teachers thoughout the state of new mexico. The new mexico Network for Educational Communications. an http://www.nedcomm.nm.org/
Extractions: IMPORTANT NOTICE It has been over 15 years since New Mexico Technet began the Network for Educational Communications Program called "Nedcomm". During that time New Mexico Technet provided this service without government funds of any type. In the first 10 years of its existence, it was often the only way for an educator to get Internet access. Over the years affordable Internet access has evolved and is now available virtually everywhere in the state of New Mexico that can be reached with a telephone line. In August 2001, New Mexico Technet sold the Internet portion of our business to Oso Grande Technologies. This was done for a number of reasons, not the least being that the Internet business belonged in the commercial marketplace. Over the last year New Mexico Technet has been financially subsidizing your Nedcomm account through Oso Grande Technologies. Unfortunately, Technet can no longer subsidize these accounts.
