Extractions: TRENTON, N.J. Two U.S. Postal Service facilities in New Jersey will undergo testing for the presence of anthrax on Sunday following this week's discovery of the bacteria on a mailbox in Princeton, officials said on Friday. The testing, described by the Postal Service as purely precautionary, will be conducted at two regional distribution centers, officials said. "We owe it to the employees who work at those facilities," said Postal Service spokeswoman Diane Todd. The Postal Service said in a news release that state and federal health agencies do not believe there is any health risk at the two New Jersey sites to be tested on Sunday. Testing is expected to last three to four hours, officials said. "If traces of anthrax spores are discovered, the impacted areas will be taken out of service, isolated and sanitized until testing is negative for the presence of anthrax," the Postal Service said. "Based on findings, we will be working with public health officials to determine if any medical steps are necessary."

Click here for the Wyckoff School System homepage The Board of Education, administration and faculty believe that the schools exist for the benefit of each student regardless of his or her capacity for learning, that each student has a unique set of needs which must be met, and that it is the purpose of the schools to help each student reach his or her potential intellectually, socially and emotionally. Each school offers a variety of academic, cultural, aesthetic, enrichment and remedial programs to meet the diverse needs of the students. Among these are: academically gifted and talented program, talented art program, guidance services from pre-school screening through high school orientation, library/media center services, resource center instruction, special education classes for students with special needs, and speech/language therapy. Each school has a computer room which provides opportunities for students to become familiar with the use of computers. For the past several years the emphasis for curriculum and instruction in the Wyckoff Schools has been on learning content more through critical thinking and problem solving strategies than through rote learning of facts. Students have increasingly been required to apply and demonstrate what they know. Through performance tasks, demonstrations and portfolios, students show they can apply what they have learned.

Extractions: January/February 1999 Designing Modern School Media Centers By Patricia A. Petracco School libraries are not what they were in the past. In fact, the contemporary term used for them is "school/library media centers" which points to the fact that they have become multimedia learning centers for students and staff. The look of the modern school library is different too. The warehouse image of tall stacks filled with books, a few reading tables and a small circulation desk has been replaced with new designs to accommodate the changing role of the school media center. In the modern school library, space is likely to be more open to permit flexibility of use; shelving and furniture will reflect the variety of materials now available as well as the multipurpose activities in which students participate; and computers, now considered an essential information appliance, will be very visible. In some places, the old circulation desk has been replaced with a self-checkout system, enabling the media specialist (or librarian) to spend more time working with students. Using the basic design concept that "form follows function," the design of school media centers has evolved to accommodate their expanding role in the education process. The media center is an integral part of the school's instructional program. The goal of the school library/media center is to help students develop "information literacy"the ability to find and use information. Thanks to electronic technology, libraries can now expand students' information access beyond the physical limits of the school building to almost any place in the world.
