NJPHA Legislative Action Alert schools and improve childrens diets and health. While there are strong nutritionstandards for foods Gateway Center, 11th Floor newark, new jersey 07102 (973 http://www.njpha.org/Advocacy/actionalert.htm
Extractions: March 2, 2004 S. 1392 was introduced by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), ranking member on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, on July 10, 2003. This legislation would reduce the presence of low-nutrition foods in schools. This bill would require the Secretary of the Agriculture to work with the National Academies' Institute of Medicine to develop regulations regarding the nutritional quality of foods sold out of vending machines, a la carte lines, fund-raisers, and other venues throughout the campus, throughout the school day. Action Needed Contact your Senators and urge them to Co-Sponsor S. 1392 to get junk food out of the schools and improve childrens diets and health. Background While childhood obesity is skyrocketing, many of our nation's schools raise funds by selling soda and other low-nutrition foods to children. While there are strong nutrition standards for foods served as part of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, foods sold out of vending machines, a la carte lines, and fundraisers do not have to meet those standards. Sponsor/Cosponsor(s) 3: Bingaman, Jeff (D-NM) Harkin, Tom (D-IA) Kennedy, Edward (D-MA)
