Should I Join A New Processing Cooperative? Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, new jersey. Department of Information, CooperativeExtension, Washington Economics, Minnesota Extension service, University of http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/agecon/farmmgt/eb67w.htm
Extractions: Quentin Burdick Center For Cooperatives A renewed interest in cooperative agri-businesses is sweeping across the Northern Plains. These new cooperatives are structured differently than traditional farm supply and elevator cooperatives. The new venture cooperatives are focused on processing and marketing processed products rather than supplying production inputs or marketing raw agricultural commodities. They require producer members to supply raw commodities for processing through marketing contracts, and tie the amount of commodity supplied to the purchase of equity stock in the cooperative. The new cooperatives are selling enough equity stock shares, and related delivery rights, to meet the cooperatives' financial needs and ensure peak use of processing facilities. A combination of factors make the decision about becoming a member in a new venture cooperative unique and complex. This publication is designed to identify the key aspects of that decision by asking five questions. They are:

Crop Profile For Cranberries In New Jersey ext. Bull. Comments on draft new jersey cranberry crop profile (Rutgers Cooperativeextension internal new jersey Agricultural extension service (NJAES) Publ. http://pestdata.ncsu.edu/cropprofiles/docs/njcranberries.html
Extractions: Prepared: November, 2003 Cranberries are a high-value crop assessed at roughly $107 million nationally in 2000 (69). This is significantly lower than the value assessed in 1997 at roughly $350 million nationally. Specifically, the cranberry market has experienced sharp downturns with steep reduction in the average price per barrel from $63.70 in 1997 to as low as $17.80 in 1999; there was a slight increase in 2000 to $19.60 (69, 70). Due to surplus production, the Federal Cranberry Marketing Committee issued a restrictive marketing order in effect for both 2000 and 2001. More than 5.6 million barrels of fruit were produced on 36,600 acres in the United States in 2000 (69). In 2000, Wisconsin was the leading cranberry producer, followed closely by Massachusetts. New Jersey ranked third at 8.7 percent of the total national output (69). In 2000, New Jersey harvested 489,000 barrels of fruit at a production value of roughly 9.3 million dollars (69). The cash receipt total for New Jersey cranberry for 2000 of 13.8 million dollars is substantially lower than the 1997 total of nearly 34 million dollars (49). Production Regions Cranberries are grown commercially in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey on approximately 3, 911 acres (71). Production is centered around the town of Chatsworth in Burlington County. Thirty-five of New Jersey's 47cranberry farms were located in Burlington County in 1997 (71). The majority of the remaining farms were located in the nearby counties of Atlantic and Ocean (50, 71).

A MODIFIED CARROT WEEVIL (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) MONITORING TRAP Gerald M. Ghidiu and Richard W. VanVranken Rutgers Research Center Mays Landing, NJ 08330-1533 Until recently, growers generally used in-furrow granular insecticides or multiple soil-directed sprays of insecticides, such as azinphosmethyl, for control of carrot weevils. These materials killed the adults and larvae before they tunnelled into the roots. However, azinphosmethyl and parathion registrations on carrots were discontinued, and the management of carrot weevils is now obtained by repeated foliar applications of the pyrethroid esfenvalerate directed at the overwintered adults before they oviposit. However, the pyrethroids have a short residual period when exposed to the environment, and an accurate population monitoring system is necessary to determine adult activity. In New Jersey, it is recommended that growers begin insecticide sprays when adult activity begins (Anonymous 1995). A monitoring system for the weevils, then, must provide reliable and timely captures of adults.

Public Perceptions Of Agricultural Biotechnology: New Jersey A survey of new jersey Residents. William K Specialist, Rutgers Cooperative Extension service; Ms. Clare Liptak, Extension Dean of the new jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and http://www.nal.usda.gov/bic/Pubpercep
Extractions: Sample demographics ... Biotechnology Survey Table of Tables Acknowledgements Executive Summary Biotechnology is expected to produce significant economic and environmental benefits as a result of the development of new varieties of plants and animals and improved agricultural productivity. Seen by many as a key technology for the 21st century, and as an economic stimulus for the State of New Jersey and for the Nation, biotechnology has been the subject of intense scientific and public debate. Yet, while experts and activists continue to argue, genetic engineering techniques are already leading to agricultural products that may soon be on supermarket shelves.
