College&Community Relations :: The College Of New Jersey of eight members was elected semiannually by the boarding school. The last week of the school year was known as water rafting, and a Spirit of new York dinner http://www.tcnj.edu/~150years/history/history3.html
Extractions: The transition to student government as a method of control came about in 1909-1910. In 1917 a student council of eight members was elected semiannually by the boarding school. This organization was known as the Student Council of the State Normal School Dormitories at Trenton. With some minor changes the government remained the same until 1928 when the increase in commuting students made evident the need for a supplementary plan. At that time the Student Cooperative Association was formed. By 1955 its purpose was to "act as a clearing house for all problems affecting the social welfare of the students, to unify the student activities in The College, and to foster and promote all those interests which contribute to the well-rounded life of the individual." The Association was directed by the Student Executive Board of fourteen members elected by the classes. Today, the Student Government Association has approximately sixty members, elected by the student body. Each academic department, as well as each class, is represented. In addition to the basic duty of protecting student rights, the SGA addresses student grievances, provides legal assistance to students, sponsors campus-wide activities, and monitors the constitutions of all other student organizations.

Extractions: Establishing the School Westtown's original building, completed in 1799, in a photograph taken in 1864. Westtown School first opened it doors to students in May, 1799. Twenty boys and twenty girls, most in their teens but some as young as eight years old, entered the school from Quaker families primarily in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. The opening of Westtown School was the result of many years of decision-making, planning and fundraising by members of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Philadelphia Quakers established the boarding school to have a setting where the moral development of their children could be attended to along with their schooling. Land for the school was purchased in Chester County, Pennsylvania, at that time a full day's stage ride from Philadelphia. The distant location was an intentional effort by the Philadelphia Quakers to keep their children away from the influences of the city. The property of six hundred acres provided other advantages for the fledgling school, including clay for making bricks for the new building. To further prepare for the opening, supplies were gathered, and teachers and a superintendent and matron were hired and charged with running the school in a family-like atmosphere. The group of forty students who arrived in 1799 were joined by an additional twenty or so each month until the size of the school reached one hundred boys and one hundred girls.
