The state Board of Education held a public hearing Wednesday on whether to alter certification requirements to include the new method. Afterward, proponents of the tests held a news conference to explain it. Rep. John Alger, R-Rumney, said the computerized test would help the state comply with the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which will require teachers of core academic subjects to be highly qualified by the end of the 2005-06 school year. Current teachers in rural districts, however, have another year. The alternative certification program will help attract top quality people from other careers into education and ease the teacher shortage, particularly in rural areas, Alger said.
