The median age is 42.0, with 25.1 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 20.7 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 2,346, with an average size of 2.4 persons. Of those, 1,532 are family households, with an average size of 2.9 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 2,509 total housing units. Population density, 2002: 156.5 persons per square mile of land area. Peterborough contains 38.0 square miles of land area and 0.4 square miles of inland water area. Origin: Although not known for certain, this town was probably named from Charles Mordaunt, third Earl of Peterborough. Other possibilities include it having been named Peter's Borough for Peter Prescott, clerk of the Masonian Proprietors, or for St. Petersburg in Russia. Peterborough was among the soldier's towns named during the term of Governor Jonathan Belcher when New Hampshire was still a province of Massachusetts. The town had the first free public library supported by taxation, and the first mill in the state that wove cloth mechanically. It is home to the MacDowell Colony, a retreat for writers, artists, and composers. Guests have included Edward Arlington Robinson, Leonard Bernstein, and Thornton Wilder, whose play "Our Town" was inspired by Peterborough.

Extractions: Prior to 1963, a "system" of public higher education did not exist in New Hampshire. The State University in Durham was governed by its own Board of Trustees and the two Teachers' Colleges at Plymouth and Keene fell under the jurisdiction of the State Board of Education. The "University System of New Hampshire" grew out of deliberations of the 1963 State Legislature, which acted upon the recommendations of an Interim Commission on Higher Education. Governor Wesley Powell appointed the commission in 1961 and charged them with developing a plan that would enable New Hampshire's institutions of public higher education to better cope with the anticipated explosion in student enrollment. In 1963 the Commission presented an "Act Relative to the Reorganization of Public Higher Education in New Hampshire" to the New Hampshire General Court. The legislation that followed made subtle, but significant changes, in the wording of the existing state laws:

Extractions: North Middlesex Regional School District Ashby Pepperell Townsend Massachusetts The North Middlesex Regional School District, serving the towns of Ashby, Pepperell and Townsend, is located in the north/central section of Massachusetts on the New Hampshire border. The three towns served by the district cover approximately 80 square miles and are located in the suburbs near the cities of Fitchburg, Lowell, Worcester and Nashua, NH. The district, which is growing in size, is fewer than 50 miles northwest of Massachusetts' capital city, Boston. Residents of the area are to be found working in a wide variety of vocations in the high technology, higher education, plastics, and paper enterprises that are prominent in the region. Fitchburg State College is located 10 miles south in Fitchburg, and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell is only twenty miles east. Lakes, mountains and state parks abound in the area with the mountain and seashore activities of New Hampshire and Cape Cod only one and one-half hour's drive away. Each town has a separate town meeting/selectman form of government. A single Regional School Committee, with membership from each of the three towns, is responsible for the operation of schools.

Extractions: Welcome to Session I of the 1999 School District Meeting. This is the so-called "deliberative session." Each of the warrant articles listed will be read and discussed, and are subject to amendment by those present. Session II, to be held on March 9, will be limited to voting on the articles on the written ballot, to include election of school moderator and school board positions. Recognition: Prior to the deliberation of the warrant articles, John Lowy will receive a Distinguished Service Award for his service to the district. Article 3: Shall the School District raise and appropriate the sum of $19,724,705 for the partial reconstruction, enlargement, renovation and equipping of the high school, said sum to be in addition to any federal, state, or private funds made available therefore; and authorize the issuance of not more than $19,724,705 of bond or notes in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Finance Act (RSA Chapter 33); and authorize the School Board to issue and negotiate such bonds or notes and to determine the rate of interest thereto; or take any action relative thereto? Furthermore, shall the School District raise and appropriate the additional sum of $532,408 for the payment of the first year's interest on the bonds or notes authorized by this article? The second set of problems relates to space - the building is too small to handle our present and future educational program and enrollment needs. The space problem exists both in terms of core facilities and classrooms. The current core facilities (cafeteria, gymnasium and library) are all inadequate for our present enrollment. This problem will be exacerbated as the student population grows. The overall size of the building is too small for the number of people it services. It is impossible to move around the corridors without feeling extremely crowded.
