Extractions: Center for Criminal Justice Policy Research officials seek to improve data By Michael Keegan he Center for Criminal Justice Policy Research has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Justice Department to improve the reporting of hate crimes across the country. The collection of national hate crime statistics has been mandated since 1990, but many police departments and law enforcement agencies underreport the incidences for a variety of reasons, according to Jack McDevitt, assistant professor of criminal justice and director of the center. "Many police departments don't know what to look for, they're not properly trained, it costs more money," McDevitt said. "Some police departments are reporting, but many are not and some are reporting inaccurately." Under the one-year grant, McDevitt said the center's staff and students will work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine why departments don't report or underreport and then offer training and support to law enforcement to improve the reporting of hate crimes.
