St. Johnsbury Academy | Welcome experience a breadth of American culture, especially in family life, that is unusual in American boarding schools. Our Vermont and new hampshire students lose http://www.stjohnsburyacademy.org/school/welcome.html
Extractions: OUR SCHOOL St. Johnsbury Academy, combining as it does an international boarding program with a local day school, and offering itself to New England as an Advanced Placement training center for teachers, a regional vocational center, and a cutting edge voucher school, is arguably the most complex high school in America and certainly among the most original and dynamic. I can't even think of a runner up, and I've been visiting schools here and abroad as an evaluator for 25 years. Since 1842, St. Johnsbury Academy has been a significant leader in education. It is widely recognized among both public and private school educators as a school that fosters character, academic excellence, and civic responsibility. This remarkable regional academy and international boarding school has a proud tradition and maintains an uncommon dignity in the education of its diverse student body. Through its 160 distinguished years, the Academy has grown to provide a comprehensive curriculum to a very cosmopolitan student body. Typically students choose to attend the Academy from 30 New Hampshire and Vermont communities, 18-20 states, and 15-20 other nations. Today, about 20% of the 900 population are resident students who come from afar. The addition of this international community to the Academy campus is very fruitful. International and local students react with each other to form a synergy that is mutually beneficial. The international students come to a stable New England community where they experience a breadth of American culture, especially in family life, that is unusual in American boarding schools. Our Vermont and New Hampshire students lose their fear of the larger world by knowing and becoming friends with students who are coming and succeeding in a place that is up to 10,000 miles from their homes.

Extractions: New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies The Truth About New Hampshire's SAT Scores Author: Douglas E. Hall Executive Director New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies In Association with: Institute for Policy and Social Science Research University of New Hampshire April 1999 Summary of Findings Analysis of the scores of New Hampshire public school students on the 1994 SAT was done in 1995. That research resulted in some important findings that are relevant to todays educational discussion. Rather than rely on conventional wisdom and oft-repeated phrases, we hope that those with responsibility for educational policy and practice in the state will incorporate these factual findings into their understanding and deliberations. New Hampshire's oft-touted high SAT scores are based on comparison to a group of 23 states, not all 49 states. State average scores include both private and public schools students. An unusually high percentage of test-takers in New Hampshire attend private schools, including elite boarding schools. When comparing results among public school students only, New Hampshire is still among the states that have scores above average. Students from racial minorities comprise only 5% of New Hampshire's SAT test-takers and they greatly outperform their counterparts in other states.

The city of Manchester is situated on the Merrimac River, in the State of New Hampshire, and was granted its charter 10 July, 1846. Its population is about 70,000, nearly three-fifths of which is Catholic. There are in the city nine large Catholic churches with flourishing parish schools. There are also two small churches, a succursal chapel of the cathedral, and a Ruthenian Catholic church. The Diocese of Manchester was established 4 May, 1884, by a division of the Diocese of Portland which had included both Maine and New Hampshire. It comprises the entire State of New Hampshire, an area of 9305 sq. miles. The total population of the diocese is 412,000, of which 126,034 are Catholics. Denis Mary Bradley, the first bishop, was born in Castle Island, County Kerry, Ireland, 23 Feb., 1846; died 13 Dec., 1903. At the age of eight he came to the United States, settling at Manchester. His early education was obtained at the parochial schools of Manchester and at Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts. On the completion of his academic course he entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Troy, New York, where, on 3 June, 1871, he was ordained. He was assigned duties in Portland, Maine, and three years later Bishop Bacon Christian education of children and in charitable work.
