Extractions: The year 1963 opens with Half Moon at sea on Ocean Station Bravo under the command of Commander Jay P. Dayton. After spending both Christmas and New Years on-station, she was relieved by the Coos Bay on January 6th and headed for an overnight stop in Argentia, New Foundland. Underway again on the 9th, she arrived back in New York on January 12th. Four weeks later, on February 9th the Half Moon departed New York for a rather special deployment to Ocean Station Charlie . The ship was scheduled to visit Ireland at the conclusion of the normal patrol - to arrive in Dublin in time for St. Patricks Day. The ship arrived on station and assumed her duties as Charlie . A special assignment to moor a buoy at the center of the station turned into a tragedy when one of the small boats overturned, throwing the five man boat crew into the frigid water. Four of the crew were rescued without serious injury. The coxswain could not be pulled from the water in time and lost his life in the incident. The Half Moon made her scheduled trip to Dublin and returned to New York on March 30th.

Extractions: Option HyperCanada: Towards Maximum Satisfaction A Proposal DUE 1992-01-15 In the past, ambiguity was the name of the game for Canadian compromise. This proposal calls for a clarification of the terms (nation, province, country, state, republic, commonwealth, kingdom, etc.) to recognise nations within Canada to achieve maximum flexibility to accommodate diversity in values held by its citizens. Today, Canada is supposed to be a nation with 10 provinces. However, at least 1 provincial legislature is called the national assembly, creating confusions as to whether there are nations within a nation competing with one another. If this proposal is adopted, "Canada" will cease to exist as a nation, but will be defined as an entity (country) which consists of 2 nations, 9 provinces and 2 territories as its integral elements. The term "aboriginal" should be used instead of "native" to describe indigenous peoples of Canada in order to avoid conflict with native-born people of Canada. For the aboriginals, a nation within Canada having a status equivalent to other provinces will be the basis of their self-government. Thus, the 1st line of the Constitution of Canada shall read the following.

Pacific News member of Canada Geographically the island of Newfoundland is as close to the British Isles as it is to British Columbia. But, emotionally, it often feels closer to Britain. Becoming part of Canada only in 1949, the province comprises the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador. What the province lacks in arable land, it more than compensates for in proximity to some of the world's greatest fishing waters. The celebrated Grand Banks lie just off the coast here, providing a rich bounty both for market and table. Overfishing has recently caused some concern, but the sea continues to provide. Today, however, the bounty is just as likely to be crude oil as fish. Provincial coffers continue to fill as oil is recovered from waters known as "iceberg alley." Minerals, forest products, and hydroelectric power are mainstays in Labrador, a vast area which beckons sportsmen and tourists for a glimpse of North American wilderness unchanged from centuries ago. History Archeological finds at L'Anse-aux-Meadows show that Norsemen established a colony here about 1000 A.D., the only known Viking settlement in North America. Fishing expeditions in the waters off Newfoundland began as early as 1500 and involved the English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The rich fishing grounds have beenand continue to bethe single most important factor in shaping the history of the land and its people.

It is noteworthy they had the technology to achieve this voyage but hard proof is lacking. Celtic Monks from Greenland are believed to have established a colony on Brion Island (Magdalen Island) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and to have eventually settled on Cape Breton Island. Their settlement by Scandinavian tradition is called Huitraamannland. It is believed they are gradually absorbed into the Micmac tradition. August: Bjarni Herjolfsson is blown off course and is believed to have sighted Labrador, Canada. The Beothuk Peoples occupied Newfoundland but usually remained inland or on the west coast. This could account for a lack of sighting by Bjarni Herjolfsson, the Viking, who arrived this year. Later accounts would classify the Beothuk as being six feet tall and light complexioned. The account went on to say when they dressed in European cloths, they looked like Englishmen. This account is probably intended as an insult towards the Beothuk. The Beothuk and Dorset people known to be very friendly had established peaceful coexistence with other people of the Newfoundland region. Lief Rirksson set out to explore Vinland (Newfoundland) with 35 men, returning with wild wheat, wild grapes and trees called mosurr (likely maple).

The most common species are kittiwake, atlantic murre, razorbills and black guillemots. The ptarmigans can be seen everywhere. The raven is also quite common and it is also possible to see the king of birds, the white tailed eagle. As everywhere in the arctic, vegetation is sparse. However, if you look carefully, you can find many spots with a very varied vegetation. In the head of the fjords Sdr. Isortoq and Fiskefjorden there are large areas with willow and green alder scrub. The most common plants and flowers are crowberry, Arctic blueberry, labrador tea, fireweed and some heather plants. Another common plant is angelica that is used for salad and a spice for schnapps.
