Extractions: GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT CANADA CLIMATE ABOUT BRITISH COLUMBIA ABOUT VANCOUVER CANADA PHOTO GALLERY ... LANGUAGE Introduction and Geography Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada encompasses territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the high Arctic to the northern border of the continental U.S.A. Although very much a "northern" country, the terrain and geography of Canada is very diverse. As well as the popular image of Canada as a country of pristine forests and snowy vistas, there are also deserts and badlands, temperate rain forests and long and wide beaches. Canada has huge inland lakes, seemingly eternal prairies and evergreen forests, woodlands and meadows. Canada's coastlines are thousands of miles long, with fjords, and long, wild rivers leading to the oceans. Government and Politics Canada is a parliamentary democracy with a federal political system. Each province or territory has its own democratically elected provincial legislature headed by a premier, and also sends elected representatives to the federal parliament in Ottawa. The House of Commons is the main federal legislature. The prime Minister is the head of the political structure, as well as an elected member of the House of Commons where he must be able to command a majority. Bills passed in the Commons are forwarded to an upper chamber, the senate, for ratification. At present, the priminister appoints senators, although there is increasing pressure to make the upper chamber too. The nominal head of state in the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II, and Her Canadian representative is the Governor-General.

Rather, it is designed as a trail registry, listing as many trails as possible, along with some basic information on location, length, items of historical or geographical interest and degree of difficulty. Anyone with a specific interest in a particular trail can easily obtain more detailed information from the contact persons indicated or from bookstores and the TrailPaq website at www.trailpaq.ca. Interestingly, the earliest trails in the province were not man made at all, having been formed over countless eons by herds of caribou migrating across the barrens and tundra. Eventually, these well worn paths would be used by native people as they wandered the interior in search of fresh game. Later, with the arrival of the first Europeans, new trails were made, some to link small iso- lated settlements along the coastline and others to reach the stands of heavy timber they needed for their boats and stages. Often, horses and ponies were used to haul out the wood on sledges across frozen bogs and marshes, the trails being largely impassable during the summer months. Along the cliffs and rocky shorelines, the local trails also provided vantage points to watch for schooners or hunt for salt water ducks and other water fowl.
