Extractions: 1. This proceeding concerns the arrival of the broadband communications services of the twenty-first century what Congress has called the "deployment on a reasonable and timely basis of advanced telecommunications capability to all Americans." We intend for advanced technology to have every opportunity to flourish and herein we seek comment on ways to make its deployment more efficient and more inclusive. Advanced capability and services can create investment, wealth, and jobs. They can meaningfully improve the nation's productivity and educational, social, and health care services. They can create a more productive, knowledgeable, and cohesive nation. 2. Many signs point to a demand for advanced services. The Internet is one of the wonders of the decade. The computer industry, promoters of leading edge technologies, and millions of ordinary consumers are clamoring for high-speed access to it. More generally, demand for more "broadband" or "high-speed bandwidth" is increasing exponentially. Methods for delivering digital information at high speeds are emerging in all segments [*2] of the communications industry wireline telephone, terrestrial and satellite wireless, cable, and broadcast, to name only a few.

Extractions: And the Birth Control Debate With their numbers on the rise, school-based health centers are an important source of counseling and medical care for low-income and uninsured youth. Controversy over family planning services has had a significant impact, however, and many centers remain limited in their ability to meet the needs of sexually active teens by dispensing contraceptives to them on-site. At the same time, a number of school-based health centers that are committed to reducing teenage pregnancy and improving teens' reproductive health are working within their communities to overcome opposition to the provision of contraceptive careand they are meeting with some success. School-based health centers increasingly are becoming part of mainstream health care, providing an important source of primary and preventive medical services to young people in the United States. Research shows that while adolescents have significant unmet health needs, those with access to a school-based health center are more likely than their peers who do not to obtain needed services. Since their inception, however, the question of whether school-based health centers should provide family planning services has sparked heated debates in many communities across the nation. With the number of school-based health centers on the rise, this controversy is likely to spread as parents, educators and health care professionals grapple with the appropriate role of school-based health centers in meeting the family planning needs of sexually active teenagers.

Extractions: Yosemite High School is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills in the rural community of Oakhurst, 12 miles from the south entrance to Yosemite National Park in Central California. The campus is on a 100-acre site graced with pines, oaks, and seasonal streams with views of the High Sierra. The appearance of our 25-year-old campus is being transformed by a construction project resulting from the passage of an $11.76 million bond measure in 1998. The project includes a comprehensive library media center, state-of-the-art computer labs, science labs, classrooms, cafeteria/multi-purpose building, swimming pool, and a $6.5 million performing arts center. Amid the clamor of construction, the student body of 1,100 and staff of 95 continue to achieve impressive educational and extra-curricular successes, and to work toward meeting the new challenges of standards-based educational programs. The school has continually raised expectations for all students. An academic focal point is the International Baccalaureate (IB) program that currently involves over 40% of our students. IB is a worldwide program, which provides a rigorous, standards-based curriculum.

Extractions: Las Vegas' Public TV Station Guts Programming to Save Itself by Ken Ward ublic television in Las Vegas just isn't what it used to be. Four years ago, KLVX didn't have a program director. By most accounts, it was understaffed, underfunded and lacked on-air promotion. Then a new management team came on board, committed to bringing Channel 10 into bigtime broadcasting. Now, after an energetic expansion and spending spree, the bubble has burst. The station is canceling programs, firing staff and hoping to avoid further cuts. The rise and decline of KLVX reflects, in miniature, the challenges encountered by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Meager ratings, conflicting missions and stiffening competition are pressuring the system as never before. And as if that weren't enough, a government-mandated transition to digital technology threatens to inflict a fiscal coup de grace. Oh, the irony.

PJNet Today: Cole Campbell On Plans For Reno J-School the news from the University of nevada, Reno, press business schools have been described as schools of decision We media white paper by the media Center at the http://pjnet.org/weblogs/pjnettoday/archives/000209.html
Extractions: A Public Journalism Network Weblog by Leonard Witt and Colleagues PJNet.org Home "Fix local news or die!" is one axiom that Cole Campbell, newly named dean of the journalism school at the University of Nevada, Reno, talks about in this special Leonard Witt IM Interview. Campbell most recently has been a fellow at the Kettering Foundation and prior to that was editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. Leonard Witt: Congratulations Cole. Since you are probably the most scholarly journalist I have ever met, this transition into running a journalism school should be a piece of cake. So what's the plan? Cole Campbell: Well, if I've learned anything from my journeys occupational, intellectual, personal it's to begin anew with humility. So my first step will be to assume the role of learner to learn from the faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni and friends of the Reynolds School of Journalism. I need to learn the history, culture, strengths and opportunities. Witt: Okay, but you are not going in there as a blank slate. You must have some ideas waiting to burst forth. What might they be?
