Extractions: Las Vegas and the state of Nevada are located in Southwestern United States east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The entire state lies in the rain-shadow desert formed by the mountain range and receives very little rainfall. The climate is extremely hot and dry. Most of the state only receives an average of four inches (10 cm) of rainfall per year, with more than 250 days of sunshine. Summers are quite hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 degrees F (40 C). In the winter months, daytime temperatures are usually a quite comfortable 60 - 70 deg. (15 - 20 C) with chilly nights. Early spring and late autumn are the best times to visit as the days are quite warm and the nights very pleasant. Visit the Grand Canyon! Running more than 50 miles southwest-to-northeast and more than 150 miles northwest-to-southeast, it is the largest national park in the contiguous U.S. Ecologically, its plants and animals of are representative of the Mojave Desert; geologists consider it to be located in the southeastern Great Basin Desert. Death Valley itself is a large desert trough nearly surrounded by mountains. It is nestled between the Amargosa Range on the east which includes the Black, the Funeral and the Grapevine Mountains and the Panamint Range on the west which includes the Cottonwood Mountains. The Owlshead Mountains rise at the south end of the park and the Sylvania Mountains border the northern end. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level near Badwater as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. The first annual "Geography of the West Field Camp" focused on the Basin and Range physiographic province of western North America. The field camp was led by Geography professor Karl Lillquist and Resource Management graduate student Damon Roberts. The participants included six CWU students and six students from other universities in North America and Hawaii. The objectives of the course were enhance student knowledge of field research methodologies and understanding of the physical, human, and resource geography of the arid West via field tripping and detailed research in a Nevada basin and range. We spent much of the first week field-tripping from Ellensburg to central Nevada. Enroute we explored the physical, human, and resource geography of such varied places as Mount Hood, Camp Creek, Newberry Crater, Fort Rock, Black Rock Desert, Pyramid Lake, Sand Mountain, and Austin, Nevada. Once in central Nevada, we set up a tent-based camp in central Grass Valley where students were introduced to field research and began to work on a variety of research topics. These topics included riparian vegetation, vegetation and soil zonation, geomorphology, wildlife, fire history, land use history, and public vs. private lands issues. In our spare time, we soaked in a nearby hot springs and explored old mining ruins.

The alkali sinks and great arid stretches clothed with sagebrush and creosote bush typify Nevada's landscape. Its mountain chains generally run north and south, further segmenting the state. On the California border stand the lofty Sierra Nevada [snowy range]. The driest state in the nation, the days and nights are generally clear, and the temperature varies with the altitude as well as with the seasons. The mean elevation is c.5,500 ft (1,676 m). In the north and west the winters reach extreme cold, while in parts of the south the summers approach ovenlike heat. Carson City is the capital; Las Vegas is the largest city, and Reno the second largest. Besides the bustling activity of Reno and Las Vegas, there are many other places of interest to the Nevada visitor. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. Lake Mead Recreational Area has facilities for fishing, swimming, and boating. Other attractions include Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada-California line, Lehman Caves National Monument, Death Valley National Monument, Great Basin National Park, and restored mining ghost towns like Virginia City.

( The New York Times Magazine , July 17, 1994) An anthropologist by training (but one who has an interest in "geography" because of travel and research interests), I am fairly certain that human involvement in taking risks goes back to the earliest pre-cursors of Homo sapiens as we were foragers and gatherers going around the planet. Risk-taking continued when "we" took up agriculture ("will the rains come" or "will the crop fail?") and we settled down into relatively permanent, and rapidly-growing, settlements. The gambling, however, that we in this room might do will probably take place at "the Lake" or perhaps at a local Native American Indian Casino. This is the type of gambling that I have been studying for many years.
