The Society encourages the dissemination of scientific and practical knowledge through semiformal presentations, field trips and symposia as well as by publishing the literature resulting from these activities. The Society has developed a secondary mission, through the GSN Foundation , of funding a number of earth science related charitable programs, including grants for K-12 field trips , university scholarships and grants for geological mapping. Currently there are about 830 members in the GSN. The majority are based in Nevada but members live throughout the United States and in a number of foreign countries. The Society is made up of a broad spectrum of individuals interested in the earth sciences and the natural resource industries. Schools in rural America face an array of problems every bit as daunting and intractable as those confronting schools in urban communities. In rural communities, graduating students who see no future locally leave town, and a snowball effect begins. These young people are no longer there to start families, to send their children to school, to buy toothpaste from the local druggist or houses from the local realtor. A brain drain begins that leaves fewer high-quality workers to attract high-quality jobs. Fewer high-quality jobs means even fewer opportunities for the next generation of students, who will find themselves forced by economic necessity to leave the community. In fact, in 22 states, more than half of all rural schools lost students between the 1994-95 and 1997-98 school years, according to the newsletter Rural Policy Matters. Those states with the highest percentages of enrollment loss were Louisiana, Idaho, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. States with large rural populations have begun to face these and other problems of rural schooling directly.

Extractions: In 1997 the Nevada Legislature passed the Nevada Education Reform Act (NERA). Under this act the Council to Establish Academic Standards in Public Schools was appointed to write content and student performance standards in major core subjects; public schools were classified along a continuum of achievement based on student performance on norm-referenced tests; and new criterion-referenced tests were projected for development. In addition, the Legislative Committee on Education was required to recommend to the Nevada Department of Education programs of remedial study that had been proven to be successful in improving the academic achievement of pupils in the subject areas of reading, writing, mathematics and science. The first set of Nevada Standards, including language arts, was adopted by the State Board of Education in August 1998 and went into effect in the 1999-2000 school year. Standards in English/language arts, mathematics, and science were put in place in 1999-2000; then in 2000-2001 a full set of standards covering additional subjects, including social studies, physical education, computer technology, health, foreign language the arts, and information literacy were put in place.
