The Frances Henne Award has been awarded to Teresa Diaz of Johnston High School in Austin, Texas. The award, sponsored by Greenwood Publishing Group, is awarded to a school library media specialist with five or fewer years in the field, to attend an American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference or AASL National Conference for the first time. The Information Technology Pathfinder Award , sponsored by the Follett Software Company, was awarded in the secondary category to Sarah McElrath of the Lakeshore Middle School in Grand Haven, Michigan. The $1,250 award recognizes school library media specialists demonstrating vision and leadership through the use of information technology to build lifelong learners. The elementary category was not awarded this year.

Prior to coming to TMS, she worked as a library paraprofessional at Tolland High School for six years, and as librarian at Vernon Center Middle School for one. Peggy Cass, Library Media Specialist This is Mrs. Cass first year at Tolland Middle School and Birch Grove Primary School. Mrs. Cass has worked as a Media Specialist in Omaha, Nebraska and as a Childrens Librarian in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. She is a native of New York City and a graduate of Lehman College in the Bronx. She will receive her Masters of Technology in Education from Lesley College in Boston this January. Mrs. Cass returned to New England to live closer to her two grandchildren, Cameron and Faith. Even though she is not a sports fan, her entire family roots for the NY Yankees, the NY Giants and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. She is an avid reader and enjoys golfing and biking during the summer.

In addition, there are a number of small rural schools and one parochial school surrounding these three communities. All these entities provide a first-class education, with a drop-out rate between seventh grade and twelfth grade at an unbelievably low 3.3 percent. Gothenburg School District No. 20 in Dawson County covers 121-square-miles and is a Class 3, Type K-12 district. It provides education through strong instructional leadership, a positive learning environment, continuous assessment of pupil progress, quality staff and a partnership in learning with parents, the community, and private business. The K-12 district was established in 1925 and has maintained excellence in education for over 75 years. The elementary school is accredited by the State of Nebraska, while the junior and senior high schools carry the North Central accreditation. An estimated 97 percent of eighth-grade students finish high school in Dawson County. With the passage of a recent bond issue, construction of a new junior/senior high school will begin in 2002. Adult educational programs are held in the Gothenburg Public High School in conjunction with the Central Community College and offered by the University of Nebraska at Kearney, based on need. Gothenburg is a member of Educational Service Unit No. 10, which is headquartered in Kearney and serves seven counties. Services available through this service unit include speech therapy, school health programs, computer service, special education for trainable handicapped, electronic repair service, learning center, instructional media center, delivery services, resource teachers, school psychological services, special education supervision, staff development, driver education simulator, audiology assessment, industrial technology, ESL services, grant programs, and computer bulletin board services.
