Extractions: An interesting topic that could be localized by any paper. GERRY O'BRIEN, Butte By SANDRA KALLIO/Wisconsin State Journal While public schools have been criticized for racial and gender achievement gaps for decades, there's another gap under scrutiny parental involvement in schools, particularly among men and minorities. Nine of 10 Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members are women and more than eight in 10 are white, according to the national PTA. While the organization has come a long way in the century since it was founded as the National Congress of Mothers, it remains far from balanced demographically. That's why the PTA is piloting an Hispanic Outreach Initiative in California, Florida and Texas. The goal is to create a network of Latino leaders to reach out to Latino families, so they feel welcome to participate in their children's education. This is not just a warm, fuzzy concept. Research indicates that when parents are involved in schools, their children do better academically. Parent-teacher groups in the Madison School District seem to include more men than the national average but remain mighty white. According to a tally of board presidents and co-presidents listed on school district Web sites, about eight in 10 top officers are women. Those contacted for this story note few peers from minority populations, even though about four of every 10 students are minorities.

Extractions: The school nurse plays a vital role in the school community partnership. Use of her skills in intervention and advocacy will help to prevent initiation and support cessation of tobacco use among school children. Tobacco Kills - Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), also known as secondhand smoke, is known to cause smoking-related illnesses and even death. Children are especially susceptible to ETS because their lungs are still developing. Children who are exposed to ETS are more likely to develop chronic coughs, ear infections and reduced lung function. Exposre to secondhand smoke also increases their risk for developing asthma, and, in infants, of dying from SIDS. School Community Partnership - As part of a communty-wide initiative, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department has come together with key partners to help prevent initiation of tobacco use among children and adolescents and to protect workers and the public frm exposure to secondhand smoke. Current goals for the school/community program include assessment/development of school tobacco policies, providing ETS education opportunities for parents via PTAs and PTOs and Home and School Association, and identifying youth advocates in schools with the objective of promoting greater involvement by youth in advocacy and tobacco prevention.

That's the opinion of several Grand Island residents who are the leaders of the PTAs, PTOs or Parent Action Teams at schools that have been targeted for improvement by a community building committee. After that, consensus breaks down about when Grand Island school officials should ask the community for the money to build, expand and renovate schools.
