Extractions: A branch experimental state farm was located at North Platte. A system of junior or summer state normal schools was established, an act requiring railroads to give elevator firms or associations equal shipping privileges, and an act to compel the destruction of prairie dogs by the owners of the land where the dog towns were located. The changes in the physical map of Nebraska deserve a paragraph. The original territory of Nebraska was bounded on the north by the British Possessions, on the west by the Rocky mountains, on the south by the 40th degree of latitude, and on the east by the Missouri and White Earth rivers, including a large part of what is now the states of North and South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. By the act of March 2, 1860, the Territory of Dakota was created, including the region north of the 43rd degrees of latitude, the Keya Paha and Niobrara rivers. The same act added to Nebraska a tract of country west of the Rocky mountains which had been part SEMI-CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF NEBRASKA of Utah and Washington. By the act of February 28, 1861, Colorado was organized, cutting out a part of the southwest corner of Nebraska. Idaho was organized in March, 1863, taking that part of Nebraska west of the 104th degree of longitude, our present western limit. In 1882 the triangular tract between the Niobrara, the Keya Paha, the Missouri, and the 43rd degree of latitude was added to Nebraska and became subsequently Boyd county. Since then the only changes in Nebraska's boundaries have been slight ones along the Missouri river, the result of changes in its channel and negotiations with Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota.

The Nebraska Sandhills is a unique area, both in size and appearance. Native grassland covers 19,600 square miles of wind-deposited sand dunes. Its geology makes the area rich for wildlife, water and ranching. The Land 19,600 square miles Landscape Ecology The Sandhills Habitat Program is an ecosystem management approach based on an understanding of the Sandhills' geologic and economic forces that shape the natural environment of the region. Without knowing the land and the people, management is ineffective. The sand dunes' influence on the area's hydrology is the basis of the Sandhills ecology. Hundreds of feet of course sand and gravel lie below the surface and contain one of the largest aquifers in North America. The dunes act like a giant sponge that quickly absorbs precipitation, allowing very little to run off. One fourth to one-half of the annual rainfall percolates downward to the groundwater. In the lower interdunal valleys, the water table is elevated above the surface and forms many of the 1.3 million acres of wetlands scattered throughout the area.

Extractions: Nebraska Reading/Writing Standards Suggested Parent Activities Grades K-1 Read to your child frequently, allowing your child to look at the book with you as you read. Many parents have a regularly scheduled reading time with their children, such as after dinner or before bedtime. The focus of such read-aloud times should be on making reading a pleasurable activity for both the child and the adult, enjoying the story or information being shared. Enjoying shared reading experiences will provide children with opportunities to (a) increase vocabulary knowledge; (b) recognize some common sight words; (c) associate letters with the sounds they represent. Provide time and support for your childs attempts to read. It is likely that your child will benefit more from reading if you sit together, taking turns, and enjoying discussions about the book. o The pictures, rather than print, often govern childrens early reading attempts. For example, your child may point to pictured objects, labeling and commenting about them. As children progress in their understanding of stories, they begin to look at pictures and tell stories that sound like oral language or storytelling.
