Master Gardener volunteers may be anyone who has gardening experience and has the time to devote for public service. People who participate include active retired persons, housewives, part-time employees, garden club members and others. Volunteers who are accepted into the program are trained by faculty from the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension. The training takes place at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, 4502 Avenue I, Scottsbluff from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on training days. The 2004 training dates and topics were held in February, March and April. At the end of the training program, Master Gardeners are required to give volunteer service to their local Cooperative Extension office equal to the number of hours of training received. On average this is 40 hours. The Master Gardener works closely with Extension Educators in the local County Extension Office in solving problems or giving information. Master Gardeners also give talks or workshops to the public or write news articles about various phases of horticulture that they are knowledgeable in. Some may talk on care of house plants, others on flowers, vegetable gardening or other subjects.
Extractions: The department's roots reach back to the latter part of the 19th century. The earliest recorded sociology course taught on our campus, Social Science: A Short Study of the Chief Data of Sociology was offered in 1884. The originator of this course, George Howard, commented that, "This method intensifies the interest, develops the analytical and reasoning powers, broadens the view, creates a spirit of inquiry, and produces a healthy tendency to specialization." Among other luminaries during these early years were Mary Tremain who, in 1895 taught a course entitled, The Status of Women: History of the Development of Her Legal and Social Position , and A.R. Hill who taught Social Psychology in 1897. By the first part of this century, UNL had become a leading center of sociology in the United States. Three members of the Sociology Department, E.A. Ross, George Howard and Charles Elwood, served as Presidents of the American Sociological Association. Dr. Hattie Plum Williams introduced courses on ethnic groups, community analysis, and social service and in 1921 became the first woman to chair a department of sociology in the United States.

Earning All-America honors were Jeremy Koch, who finished 16th in 25:26.6, Andrew Walquist at 24th in 25:37 and Molly Engel in 17th place with a time of 18:20. The national mens competition marked one of the closest team races in recent memory with only 60 points separating the top seven. We had a mixed bag of results, Einspahr said. Koch had an outstanding race, as did Walquist, he said. Andrew was running with the flu and was in 11th place before he collapsed 20 meters from the finish and just barely crossed the finish line. Koch is a junior from Cozad, Neb., and Walquist a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M.

"the People's Paths Home Page!" NAIIP News Path - NAJ: Innu Will Confront Hydro- Article published in Native Americas Journal, describing the problems caused by local liquor stores selling alcohol to residents of the nearby Pine Ridge reservation, observed by visiting tribal officials. http://www.yvwiiusdinvnohii.net/News99/NAJ990128.htm
Extractions: Thursday, January 28, 1999 Native Americas Whiteclay, Neb. , located 400 yards south of the Pine Ridge reservation, is a town with a registered population of 22 people and has four stores with one major line of business: the sale of beer to Indians. One day during the summer of 1997, Frank LaMere, a Winnebago, who is executive director of the Nebraska Inter-Tribal Development Corp., visited Whiteclay. He counted 32 intoxicated Indians on the streets of Whiteclay at 5:15 a.m., and 47 drunks on the streets in the afternoon, some of whom were fighting each other. Several other Indians were passed out at the intersection of Nebraska Highway 87 and the road that leads to the reservation. Others were urinating on the street. Shortly after he visited Whiteclay, LaMere asked the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission to shut Whiteclay down. "I don't know what constitutes infractions of liquor laws in Whiteclay, but my good sense tells me there is something terribly wrong ... ," LaMere told Toni Heinzl of the Omaha World-Herald. "What I saw ... in Whiteclay would not be acceptable in Omaha or Lincoln," LaMere continued. "If we walked down O Street in Lincoln and saw 47 students (of the University of Nebraska) passed out in the streets or engaged in violent situations, we would consider jerking the licenses of those liquor establishments," he told the Liquor Control Commission. The commission's executive director, Frosty Chapman, told LaMere that none of the four Whiteclay beer stores has been cited for liquor-law violations during the past 12 years. Commissioners said they cannot suspend liquor licenses without concrete evidence of violations.
