Join the Ecological Solutions Roundtable Ground water research, information, and policy needs: Strategies and priorities for extension Charles A. Francis Abstract If research results, extension publications, and national strategy statements and documents could solve our problem of "round water contamination, we would perhaps enjoy the cleanest water in the world. Reviewing documents and promotional materials from state extension services, one is impressed by the amount of thought and energy which has gone into developing information for the public. It would be very difficult for anyone in this country to not be aware, at least in a general sense, that we have a serious "round water problem and that solutions are badly needed if we are concerned about water quality for ourselves and for future generations. In spite of an apparent current apathy in the administration, there is a high lever of official concern in most of the involved federal agencies. The Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP, undated) published a set of guidelines for extension: "Groundwater Education: A Challenge for the Cooperative Extension Service." This report included the following recommendations: develop educational programs on nature of water resources Implement educational programs on impacts of agricultural chemicals on "round water quality

L. testaceipes primarily attacks greenbugs in wheat and grain sorghum and may attack corn leaf aphid to a limited extent. Description Adult L. testaceipes are black shiny wasps, slightly smaller than a mature greenbug. Eggs are laid inside an aphid host, which hatch into legless grubs (larvae). Larvae complete their development inside the aphid host. Aphids killed by L. testaceipes become tan and swollen, and are referred to as "mummies" (see photo, below)

Extractions: Bibliography Introduction Losses due to vertebrate pest damage in the Atlantic area are serious. These pest problems are worse periodically when given species are more numerous. Many growers believe there is nothing to be done other than to destroy the pest, but in many cases there are alternatives. Also, much research in proceeding on a world basis. The first step at remedying the situation is to discuss the biology of the pest with a Wildlife Biologist. In most cases only a combination of control measures will give effective results. The following table suggests control measures for each pest. These pests are listed in their order of damage to vegetable crops: Pest - DEER Usual Damage - All vegetable crops except onions are consumed from transplants to harvested crops. Root crops may be pulled or dug before consumption. Control Measures (1) Electric fencing - usually 100 percent effective with high voltage livestock fencing and equipment. Fences of 1 to 6 wires are used depending on local deer populations and whether fence is temporary or permanent. Many construction plans are available from your vegetable specialist.
