Faculty Application Guidelines Department of Surgery The General Surgery Residency at the University of Nebraska is a comprehensive, five-year surgical training program leading to Board eligibility. Emphasis is placed on developing excellence in clinical surgery in an environment which also allows involvement in research and academic activities. During the five years, the resident develops expertise in continuity of care preoperatively, postoperatively, and operative techniques through a program of graduated responsibilities. Experience is gained in general, transplantation, vascular, surgical oncology, cardiothoracic, plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck, endocrine, traumatology, and, to a lesser degree, the other surgical subspecialties. We currently offer three positions for the complete five-year general surgery program. In addition, eight positions are available in a one- to two-year preliminary program in preparation for further training in one of the surgical subspecialties. Surgical rotations and electives in the preliminary program can be modified to provide the resident with early exposure to his or her career goal. The only postgraduate fellowship program offered is in transplantation surgery. As a result, the residents' operative experience is not eroded by competition with fellows.
