Extractions: Assyrian for the "mythical place where life-influencing powers reside," the name Abzu belongs by right only to things of great importance. The Abzu site deserves its lofty label: A project of the highly regarded Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, this site is a comprehensive, well-organized guide to Internet resources on the Ancient Near East. The resources span an enormous array of topics and are the product of scholarly research and expertise. English archaeologist Simon James's site on the Celts stands out for its originality. James provides not only a conventional history of the Ancient Celts, but an alternative one too, challenging many well-entrenched ideas regarding these ancient peoples. Links to other Celtic sites and a brief bibliography of pertinent books enhance the value of this engaging and thought-provoking web page.

Contact Professor Stephen Mitchell I am an ancient historian with interests in most things about the classical world and the Near East from 300 BC to the end of antiquity. Most of my research has focused on Asia Minor and combines the study of archaeological, epigraphic and literary sources. My current research aims are to write a historical study of late antiquity (AD 285-451) and a monograph on the origins of monotheism, which will locate Christianity, Judaism and the emergence of Islam within wider currents of monotheistic belief in the ancient world. The specialised focus of my teaching over the next three years will be modules on Hellenistic History and Culture (MA), The World of Late Antiquity, and Hellenistic Religion. I am an enthusiastic traveller, especially anywhere east of Istanbul. I am a passionate non-extremist who believes in democratic tolerance and would like to live in a fair society. Two years living in Germany taught me much that I would not otherwise have known or understood. My favourite authors include Thomas Mann, Paul Celan. I am coordinating a bid by the British Epigraphy Society to host the 13th International Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy in Oxford in 2007.

Extractions: What do Hadrian's Wall, Aesop's Fables, and fish sauce have in common? The answer is that they are all studied by ancient historians. Ancient history is the study of the societies of classical Greece and Rome (together with parts of the ancient Near East). It covers the period from Archaic Greece in the eighth century BC to the collapse of the western Roman empire in the fifth century AD. It embraces an enormous area: not only Greece and Italy, but also the lands conquered and colonised by Greeks and Romans, both around the Mediterranean and beyond. This degree is designed to develop an understanding of the different techniques needed to analyse literary, documentary, and archeological evidence, and of the relationship between historical and archeological methods of interpreting the past. The ancient history course deliberately bridges the usual Greek-Roman divide to emphasise social and cultural history.

Overview This tutorial presents ancient and modern interpretations of the revolts in the empire, using key terms and concepts. The Egyptian revolt The first event that we know about in the life of Xerxes was the outbreak of revolt in Egypt. This happened in June 486 BC, in the reign of Darius, and by October of that year had become a very serious situation. Darius died in that month, and perhaps the people thought that it was the best time for Egypt to break away from the Persian Empire. Although reasons for the revolt are a little unclear there is no doubt that the people also imagined that they could rebel because the king was so far away and Xerxes was a new and untried king.

She was also for much of the classical period an aggressive and imperialistic power. Her fleets of merchant-ships and triremes visited the shores of Russia and Egypt, Phoenicia and Italy, trading peacefully, waging war or making sure client-states produced their tribute on time. Ancient and modern observers have seen a contradiction here. Contemporaries at the time of the Peloponnesian War thought it inappropriate that a democratic city should rule other Greeks like an autocrat. Most recent accounts, however, see no problem with a democracy being a great power. The empire is seen as an essential part of the Athenian miracle: the world's first democracy, like her beautiful buildings and festivals of drama, was only made possible by the brutal exploitation of other states.

I must declare an interest, in that I have written for the revised C.A.H. but as an ordinary contributor, who obeyed orders but was not involved in drawing up the orders. C. Habicht, in reviewing the revised vol. vi, was provoked by two hostile allusions to "German scholarship" to protest that there are German scholars as there are English scholars, but there is no such thing as German scholarship any more than there is English scholarship. I take his point; but I also take the point which underlies this seminar, that the nation and the national tradition to which they belong may be an important part of that context of their own which inevitably affects all people who write about history. It may be significant that, while great classical encyclopaedias have come from continental countries, there is a Cambridge Ancient History but not a multi-author Berliner Alte Geschichte or an Histoire ancienne de Paris . Lawson, Jr. Younger Amazon base price: Average review score: Comparative Historiography (Israel and Ancient Near East) Dr. Younger's work on Israelite and Ancient Near Eastern historiography is a fresh approach to the thorny issues which plage each discipline. He divides the work into six chapters (I Introduction, II Assyrian Conquest Accounts, III Hittite Conquest Accounts, IV Egyptian Conquest Accounts, V Joshua 9-12, VI Implications and Entailments). The work has as its premise each culture surveyed utilized a type of template for writing a certain type of historiography. The method which Younger utilizes is a modified semiotic approach combined with a literary format. Younger is sympathetic to the ideological elements which motivate the historiographers of each culture. However it is Younger's contention that within each culture one may observe certain methods (shared?) of historiography. This work is a distillation of Younger's dissertation and as such it is not for the novice. Ancient Cyprus (British Museum) Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1988)
