They were divided into 12 clans, each speaking different dialects. A clan did not align with particular territories but lived scattered throughout the island. Nauruans are a matrilineal people. They were divided into nobility and commoners. Families usually dwelt in separate units but they might combine with others to form common households. The Indigenous Nauruans link their culture to a mixture of settlers from their neighbouring island nations - Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and the other Micronesian nations. Their unique language is a fusion between the languages of Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshalls and the Solomons.
