American Mother's Day is a national holiday in large part due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, a native of Grafton, West Virginia. After her mother, Anna Reese Jarvis, died in 1905, Ms. Jarvis set took on the challenge of establishing a holiday to honor American mothers. In 1908, ceremonies were held in Grafton and in Philadelphia to honor her mother, whose favorite flower, the carnation, was displayed. Ms. Jarvis's ambitious letter-writing campaign saw its first broad success with the pronouncement of state holidays in West Virginia and Oklahoma in 1910. Just three years later, in 1913, the House of Representatives passed a resolution asking all federal government officials to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day. The carnation remains the traditional flower of the holiday, with red carnations for living mothers and white for those who are deceased. A year later, in 1914, Congress passed a Joint Resolution declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

But the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving began at some unknown date between September 21 and November 9, most likely in very early October. The date of Thanksgiving was probably set by Lincoln to somewhat correlate with the anchoring of the Mayflower at Cape Cod, which occurred on November 21, 1620 (by our modern Gregorian calendarit was November 11 to the Pilgrims who used the Julian calendar).
