Extractions: The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.

The history of Virginia City, Montana is important to the entire United States because strategic events were worked out in Virginia City during the Civil War. That History begins on 16 June 1863 with the registration of the town site of the new settlement as "Verona", their spelling of Varina, the wife of the President of the Confederate States of America. Virginia City began as Varina, in Idaho Territory, truly a Rebel town in Union territory during the Civil War. Varina The gold produced in Virginia City was strategic to the Civil War, which was being fought while the new city was being founded. The issue was the control of that far-away gold producing territory, either by the South, who had the majority of citizens, or by the North, whose land it was. With a beginning like that, it is no surprise that the early history of Virginia City is filled with lawless conflict. The lack of documentation results in extensive historic disagreement. It is a trade, ranching, and industrial center. Mining dominated the city's life and economy from its establishment in 1862. Copper, as well as zinc, silver, manganese, gold, lead, molybdenum, and arsenic have been extracted from mines in the region. First an 1860s gold-hunters' camp, then an 1870s silver center, Butte gained importance when copper was discovered (c.1880) and Marcus Daly with his Anaconda Copper Mining Company began to exploit the "richest hill on earth." A huge open-pit mine, the Berkeley, opened in 1955; its expansion forced the relocation of one fifth of Butte's population. "The Pit"was abandoned in 1982 and has filled with contaminated water draining from surrounding mines. The city, now the largest Superfund site in the nation, has become, in effect, a laboratory for environmental resuscitation efforts, and a number of pollution-remediation companies are based there. Montana Tech of the Univ. of the Montana is also in the city, and Butte is the headquarters of Deerlodge National Forest.
