Extractions: The sport of modern pentathlon simulates the trials of a military courier charged with delivering a message by horseback through hostile territory. After he loses his horse, the messenger defends himself with pistol and sword, swims a river and runs across country to accomplish his mission. Thus, the sport's five events are shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, asked that modern pentathlon be includeed in the 1912 games in Stockholm. De Coubertin wanted to revive the spriit of the pentathlon of the ancient Greeks. The ancient pentathlete wrestled, ran the length of the stadium, jumped and threw the spear and the discus. Competitors with a military background have dominated the modern pentathlon. Air pistols are used to fire 20 shots at centre fire targets, 155mm in diameter, at a range of 10m. Competitors have 40 seconds to fire each shot. Targets are changed after each shots and a score of 172 out of a possible 200 is worh 1,000 points. Every target point above or below 172 is worth plus or minus 12 points.

Extractions: Search the Archive: Back to the Weekly Home Page Classifieds Palo Alto Online Publication Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2002 World Pentathlon Championships will bring world's best to Stanford on July 15-21 by Keith Peters The dream is to bring the 2012 Summer Olympics to the Bay Area. The reality of such a task, however, means years of preparation. Before an event with the magnitude of the Olympic Games can be staged, numerous other championships must pave the way. Once such event is the 2002 Modern Pentathlon World Championship, which will be held at Stanford this summer. The world's most "complete athletes" will shoot, fence, swim, ride and run at Stanford from July 15-21 to determine this year's world champions. "Stanford University is honored to host the current and future Olympians who will be competing in this summer's Modern Pentathlon World Championship," said Stanford Athletic Director Ted Leland. "By successfully staging this World Championship, Stanford University and the San Francisco Bay Area will once again demonstrate that we're the ideal location for hosting the biggest and best of international sporting events." Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne President Klaus Schormann, speaking at a San Francisco press conference Monday, said: "I am convinced the San Francisco Bay Area will prove to have been the ideal place to test 'the complete athlete'. With our presence here, we are following in the footsteps of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. He spoke of Modern Pentathlon in San Francisco 87 years ago to the day. We are delighted to honor him by bringing the World Championships to the San Francisco Bay Area and Stanford University this summer."

Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Extractions: find a mistake... Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern pentathlon believing the event would test a man's/woman's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, thereby producing the ideal, complete athlete. The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport which consists of competition in five events in one gruelling day. Competitors earn points for their performances in each of the five disciplines: pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, riding (equestrian show jumping) and cross-country running. The total points scored in the first four events determine the starting order for the final event, turning the cross-country running into a handicap event. The leading competitor sets off first and the intervals between that competitor and those who follow is determined by the points difference between them. Because of this handicapping system, the first three competitors to cross the line at the end of the run fill the gold, silver and bronze medal positions.
Extractions: Home General Information Call For Papers Editorial Board ... Links by Richard Bell Today's Modern (Summer) Olympic Games have 32 different categories of competitive events. When you consider that of these many, like track and field, have several events within the category and then break down further to men's and women's and team and individual competition, it is nearly impossible to keep track of the Games as they progress. Things were simpler in the "old days." The Ancient Olympics had 13 events divided into 6 main categories. Of course they were for men only. The main categories were Boxing, Equestrian events, Pankration, Pentathlon, Running and Jumping. The Equestrian events were broken down into two sub-categories: chariot racing and riding. The Pentathlon was a combination of five events: discus, javelin, jump, running, and wrestling. Boxing in ancient Greece had fewer rules than boxing today. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. There was no rule that prevented a boxer from hitting an opponent when he was down. There was no weight class in either the men's or boy's divisions and the contestants were chosen randomly. The boxers did not wear gloves but wrapped their hands and wrists with leather straps called himantes.
