It is a document of standards which lays out the state's vision and expectations for a quality school and is the method of accrediting Missouri's public schools. One standard states: "The district must document how it is providing comprehensive health instruction, including, specifically, drug and alcohol abuse prevention education and AIDS prevention education to all students at every grade level." (Copies of the MSIP standards are available from DESE.) Presently, only courses that have "Health" in the course title require a Certified Health Teacher (CHT). These courses are found predominantly at the high school health level. The majority of Missouri's children (K-8) are expected to be taught health by classroom teachers who have not been certified to teach health. It is the "integrated" approach which often never gets done. Lincoln University would like to help central Missouri's active teachers become better prepared to integrate health into their classrooms by becoming Certified Health Teachers. Most of our health-related courses are offered in the late afternoon, evening, or summer for your convenience. In-service training can broaden the knowledge base of working teachers and get the much needed health curriculum actively working in Missouri schools. This letter is a request for your assistance. The teaching profession has reached a time of critical shortage. Many current teachers are reaching retirement age, and we see fewer certificates issued to new educators every year. Mathematics education is among the areas hardest hit by this shortage. In 2001, all Missouri higher education institutions combined graduated less than 100 middle and/or secondary mathematics teacher candidates. Last year more than 400 jobs were posted for mathematics teachers in Missouri. We know one of the strongest factors influencing young people to become a teacher is the encouragement of teachers they had in elementary, middle and secondary school. As a teacher, you are in a unique position to inform them about teaching as a career-its rewards as well as its challenges. Extractions: The Case of IAC, ACI, and The Three Stooges In 1982, there opened for business in Missouri the International Accrediting Commission (IAC). They aggressively marketed their accreditation services among hundreds of then-unaccredited institutions in the United States. Their standards were rather modest, but they were operating within the law, and they were able to bestow that magical word "accredited" upon their clients. More than 130 institutions had achieved IAC accreditation by 1989, when one Eric Vieth established the Eastern Missouri Business College and immediately applied to the International Accrediting Commission. Vieth opened his headquarters in a one-room office in St. Louis, Missouri, and issued an eight-page typewritten catalog that listed faculty members such as Arnold Ziffel, Edward J. Haskell, M. Howard, Jerome Howard, and Lawrence Fine. Trivia buffs may recall that Arnold Ziffel was the pig on the TV show Green Acres, Eddie Haskell was the obsequious friend on Leave It to Beaver, and the Messrs. Howard, Howard, and Fine were collectively known as the Three Stooges. It gets better. The college seal was emblazoned with the phrase Solum pro Avibus Est Educatio, which means "Education is only for the birds," and the motto was Latrocina et Raptus, or, loosely translated, everything from petty theft to highway robbery. Doctorates were offered by mail in dozens of fields, from aerospace to marine biology. The marine biology textbook was identified as The Little Golden Book of Fishes.
