Extractions: Encyclopedia Missouri, state, United States Two great rivers, the Mississippi and the Missouri, have had a great influence on the development of Missouri. The Mississippi tied the region to the South, particularly to New Orleans. The Missouri crosses the state from west to east and enters the Mississippi near St. Louis; the portion of its valley between St. Louis and what became Kansas City was the greatest avenue of early-19th-cent. advance westward across the continent. The region N of the Missouri River is largely prairie land, where, as on the Iowa plains to the north, corn and livestock are raised. Most of the region S of the Missouri is covered by foothills and by the plateau of the Ozark Mts., a region of hill country populated by a relatively isolated, self-reliant people. The rough, heavily forested eastern section of the Ozarks extends into the less hilly farming plateau in the west and encompasses the irregular, twisting Lake of the Ozarks to the northwest. The capital is Jefferson City , and the largest cities are Kansas City Saint Louis Springfield , and Independence . Places of interest include the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, in St. Louis; George Washington Carver National Monument, in Diamond; Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, near Springfield; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, in Kansas City; the Harry S. Truman Memorial Library, in Independence; and the Museum of the American Indian, in St. Joseph. A 185-mi (300 km) bicycle trail stretches from near St. Louis to Sedalia.

Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. The MidAmerica GIS Symposium will be at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center on April 18-22. Staff members from the Kansas Geological Survey, based at the University of Kansas, are helping to organize the event. Keynote speakers include Barbara J. Ryan, Associate Director for Geography for the U.S. Geological Survey, the nation's largest civilian mapping agency. The program also features 37 short courses related to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology in areas such as emergency management, law and public information, health and human services, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and infrastructure management. The meeting is sponsored by the MidAmerica GIS Consortium, a non-profit group of GIS professionals from the midwest, and is being held in conjunction with the 2004 United States Geological Survey central regional state mapping workshop. Other featured speakers include Shelby Johnson, state geographic information coordinator for Arkansas; Walter Schroeder, professor of geography at the University of MissouriColumbia; and Jim Harlan, of the University of MissouriColumbia and co-author of Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri, published in 2003 by the University of Missouri Press.

LOUIS: GEOGRAPHY LOCATION The City of St. Louis is located on 61 square miles just south of the "Meeting of the Rivers," where the Missouri and Illinois Rivers join the Mississippi River. The City is at the center of a 12 county, 7,000 square mile metropolitan area that includes approximately 2.5 million people. The area is a relatively short distance by airplane, automobile or train from such other cities as Kansas City (250 miles), Chicago (300 miles) Indianapolis (250 miles) and Memphis (300 miles). PHYSIOGRAPHY GEOLOGY DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS The City of St. Louis is 100% urbanized. However, as a result of abandonment, dereliction and contamination of properties, there are many opportunities for redevelopment of small sites within the city limits. More challenging is combining small sites some publicly-owned by the city's Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) or other agencies, and some privately owned to create substantially sized sites for new residential and industrial development. Office Space: Retail: Traditionally, downtown St. Louis was the premier retail center of the metropolitan area. Although that role has declined, downtown retains a substantial selection of unique shops, as well as two department stores (Dillard's and Famous-Barr) and two enclosed shopping malls (Union Station and St. Louis Centre). Outside downtown, City retail generally consists of corner stores and strip development along major arteries. Significant retail strips include the Central West End shopping and restaurant district along Euclid Avenue, the Grand South Grand area just south of Tower Grove Park, and Cherokee Street with its Hispanic businesses west of Jefferson Ave. and "Antique Row" east of Jefferson Ave. A few major auto-oriented shopping centers are located in the City. This means that Missouri has a lot more outcroppings than Illinois, but there are gorgeous limestone cliffs (outcroppings) above Alton on the north, and in below Columbia on the south. (These should be on your "things to do" list as they make great day-tours. The "Great River Road", from Alton North, is on the American Heritage list.) But opposite the major part St. Louis city is a large old flood plain of the Mississippi called "The Great American Bottoms". Now don't panic yet....because the last time it was flooded was in the Great Flood of 1903, long before levees protected it. It wasn't anything but damp during the great flood of 1993, although flood plains along the mississippi near Alton and near Columbia were flooded in 1993. (But we won't take you anywhere there's the chance of flooding, and the Corps of Engineers probably won't let you anyway because of new regulations.) That old, flat flood plain, The American Bottoms, is not a hospitable residential venue. Although there are some towns and cities located on it, near the river, they're not considered top relocation sites, are generally shrinking in population, and we don't work there.
