They were observed by early explorers in both Mexico Peru . Tomatoes were taken from Peru to Italy Northern Europe . They returned to the United States in 1781. Tomatoes were commonly sold in New Orleans by 1812, and tomato seeds were offered in a seed catalog in the United States in 1817. By 1835 tomatoes were generally cultivated throughout the country. "Creole Tomatoes": In the New Orleans region of the state, the term "creole" is understood to mean something that is native to New Orleans .
